My Diodes are Here.:eg:

Setting up for a Murder test Now. "Hope it doesn't die and just dims at MAX.:shhh:"

Iam going to plot everything like i did with the 638nm 500mW diode.:)

Lets see what one can do.;)

Now that is awesome. One day first class shipping.

All 9 of them.
Thanks DTR!

Mine made it all the way to CA as well :san:

I de-canned one.
It looks like I'll be sending it to tsteele for a macro
Here is my line drawing of the interior

The dark vertical lines are the posts
The center "shaded" line is the die/crystal
You can see there are still four "current"
wires

However, you can also see the ESD protection circuit
The fifth wire, in the middle, from the post to your right, bypasses the die
It is connected to an SM component
It "bridges" the anode and cathode

I'll be sending it out for macro shots

My guess is, from the drawing, that it's a tiny spark gap for the high ESD to jump across instead of through the diode?

Might be a Lasorb or some MEMS based antistatic system.

My theory, its actually a very very small air plasma tube that "trips" at some set voltage so the static is dissipated in the discharge not the expensive diode.

At these scales, the gap might only be a few hundred nanometres so the breakdown voltage can be as low as 30V (!)
Its very ingenious if so.

So wait we now have a a diode that has built in ESD protection? I wonder what other nifty surprises this thing has in it?

So now we get to tell bill to go screw himself with his lasorbs!

Did anyone use lasorbs? I always saw them and wondered if they were just a gimmick, or if they were legit. I never saw anyone using them in a build.

they are used alot more by people who build projectors.
They are commonly used in lpc arrays to help "save" the diode.
But it never works as they still die.
Most times once your build is put together the threat of esd killing your diode lowers alot.
Also the fact is you can build a better esd protection device even straight onto the diode pins.

Now all we need is a diode with a built in driver.

ESD Protection for diodes seams to be mainly needed for low power girly single mode diodes. These more modern higher power Mitsu and Nichas seam to be quite tough as nails, tougher than even gingers lazyorbs.
