Default Re: New 9mm 445 diodes

There's so much that goes into the beauty of a beam. While we may have some sense of attributes that we enjoy versus those that we don't, I suspect that as with any other type of subjective beauty, many of us can't really quantify the entirety of what goes into the equation.

Certainly divergence, wavelength, and perceived brightness are obvious factors. But there are other subtle qualities that may matter too, like the way in which a beam highlights individual speckles of dust in the air, or the degree to which a beam gives the the (false) impression of a "slowly moving" stream of particles leaving the emitter. Some of these factors will be related to power and wavelength, others to your environment, still others to the type of optics used, or the pulse rate (if applicable) of the driver.

In other words, there's a whole heck of a lot more to it than wavelength and power.

I appreciate your help and kind words. Thank you for helping me choose between the two diodes. I would not have been able to without your help!

Don't know if this has been covered or not but what size drill bit is everyone using for these modules like the ones that DTR is packaging with his diodes? They are measuring a tad under 12mm and a 12mm bit is leaving loose but manageable fit. I would prefer a slight interference fit with some thermal paste.

I believe a 15/32 bit will work I would sart it with a 29/64th first then ram the 15/32. This is totally off topic so I'm out.

For a good tight fit you need a lathe. Drill bit's wont work. I would have to look up the exact dimentions but I know it's not a common drill bit size..

Thanks Anthot! Say here is a thaught that may work.. take your 12mm drill bit in and have it sharpened down untill the hole is 11.95mm

There is another thread for this somewhere there is several opinions on the best way to do this... I have held the best of sinks from this site to lights with the module in and I was suprised how we boast about copper this aluminum that and have 1/3 of the module acually hitting the sink.

If you don't want to press in the module with a bearing press or vise or something the best way to go is the 29/64 bit on the LATHE and follow it up with the 15/32 and use thermal grease to take up the VERY small gap, or u could use an 11.75mm bit then bore the rest out with a bore bit... or use a the 29/64 bit then clean it up with the 12mm reamer which as stated above the modules are acually smaller than that.:

Just to update. I got my fourth revision of these modules in yesterday which I am calling the V4's which have a 11.92mm outer diameter compared to the 11.85mm of the previous and they fit very snug in a 12mm heatsink now. All units with copper modules will be coming with these new ones and they are finally available for individual sale.

https://sites.google.com/site/dtrlpf/home/diode-modules

They also have more surface area for contact with the heatsink because 1mm was added back to the length and the outer diameter goes all the way to the threading now, they have a much better polish and the lens threading is impeccable. Only took for revisions to get it right and I have to say these are the best copper modules I have seen.

Yes they are! Very sweet! The larger diameter definately makes these appealing. We should get it to some kind of a standard though because if we start changing module size and heatsink size there can be some big issues arrise to the people buying...

The Aixiz modules that we have been using for years have pretty big swings in size and we have always just had to deal with it. Like +/- 0.2mm from 11.9mm. I have seen from 11.80mm-12.02mm. These copper modules are in a whole new ballpark as far as consistency in size than the the Aixiz ones and will make life much simpler. I just picked the best size that does not require force to insert into a 12mm(exactly) heatsink. Both the previous versions of this copper heatsink and this one are still well in the middle of the possible tolerances of an Aixiz.

Here see this post on the tolerances of the Aixiz.
Does anyone know, or have the ability to measure the actual diameter of an Aixiz?

Default Re: New 9mm 445 diodes

yes that is why we dont buy the aixiz modules any more... Not to mention they hold heat they dont disipate it... I guess so do the coppers... but not that extreme..

I step drilled out to a 15/32 on the lathe and it seems that it will be a very tight fit.

One question I have on that blitzbuck v3 is can I set the current with no load attached to the output wires or will that hurt anything? After I set it and say that I want to adjust it will I be able to get an accurate reading while it is running the diode or do I need to disconnect the wires to the module to readjust it?

Regarding the BlitzBuck: I would suggest keeping a load on it at all times. BUT, you can adjust current while connected.

What is the lens retainer made of? I was thinking of trying to disolve it.
(have lots of acids) If its aluminum that should be easy with sodium hydroxide.
I'm aware they are coated.
I may be willing to try it to see what happens.
