Link in his sig,
A 1.8a Mohgasm can be modded to do 2a by adding a 6 ohm resistor.
The ic's on a Mohgasm are rated for up to 3a

Not efficient, but cheap

I am thinking of trying the blitzbuckv3 I am liking what I am reading on the site about it and it will fit my host perfectly.

Anyone have any real world experience with it driving one of these diodes?

The mogasm linears were rated the 1800ma max because of the heat they give out above that I believe. Have you tested one to see how long it will run? Or I guess it is possible he stoped there because there werent any diodes that could take more than that at the time. I know my 1800ma gets prety hot. Maybe we can get Blord to test some out at higher currents. I want to test out the blitzbucks too.

ive got 2x builds with the Blitzbuck V3 with these diodes, at 2.4W and 3W :)

I've read somewhere that he didn't go past 1.8, because there was no need for it.

the IC used on a mohgasm is rated for up 3A+
heatsinked to the pill, 3A would work fine, I have done 2.3A before.
Actually my 3W build is powered by a modded Mohgasm.

Also because of the higher forward voltage of the 9mm diodes, they are more efficient with linear drivers than other 445's

2.3A * (8v-5.2v-1.25) = 3.6W Heat in the regulator IC (case for 9mm at 2.3A)
1.8A * (8v-4.2v-1.25) = 4.6W Heat in the regulator IC (case for m140 at 1.8A)

That is Great news! I was thinking about that last night about the 9mm too being higher Vf than other diodes making a linear more efficient less heat. They are one of my favorite drivers.

Found out today that my 2 blitzbucks were sent back out today. So I cant wait to try them out.

I just want to be sure about one thing. If I set this diode to 2 Amps, will they all output 450nm light (and lots of it)?

445 + or minus a few nm yes... Lotsa nice blue there...

The single mode pl450B would be a better choice if you are looking for a deeper blue..

Oh, danger. Never tell someone that pushed diodes will "all" output lots of anything, particularly not pushed this hard.

2A might blow your diode. It might not.

It's also not going to be +/- a few nm. The bracket could be as high as 15nm. I've seen 443 to 458 just from H series.

The reason I ask is that I am about to build my second build (a PL450 in a Magicstickv2--when they are finished). People have told me that the 450nm light is amazing to look at so thats why I chose the PL. The only thing that seems unappealing to me about this is the low output. Anyways, I saw this diode and it seems like it is what i want because i can convert my first build, a Maglite build with a flexmodP3. Is this diode really what I am looking for?

EDIT: sorry if this is confusing. I hope you can understand what i am asking

People don't know what wavelength they're looking at. They just cite the center of a range on a datasheet.

People say "450" or "445", and 99% of the time they're talking about the same thing, which is really "a diode that is putting out somewhere between 440nm and 460nm light".

That part that you quoted was worded wrong on my part. I meant people have recommended me the PL450 for my next build because apparently the light it gives is magical.

If you couldnt understand what my post was asking, it was basically me saying "why get the pl450 and have a couple hundred mW of 450 when I can get this 9mm diode, and put it in the maglite i already have? That way I can still get the beautiful color they are talking but at 10x or more."

This deeper blue is what I am trying to achieve. I just thought i could get more of that same color with this diode. Will the PL have a way better beam quality?

Yes sorry + or - 10 -15nm.. RHD is the spectrum king! I dont know what the 450's put out in terms of real nm's but the spec sheet say's it can goto 460 ish... but I know it it a much nicer color and beam.. I find my higher power 445's put out a lighter blue beam and my lower powered put out a darker blue.. but RHD would better answer all your color q's than me I can only describe my experiences he can actually measure them...

Also I am sure that the blue I see as darker may look lighter or even darker to some people because we all dont see color the same way..

From my further research, I have concluded that these diodes are not different enough frm M-140s for my purposes. I am going to leave my Maglite build how it is and continue with my Magicstickv2 PL450 build.
