New 9mm 445 diodes

:eg:Well i see it this way,take one of those pretty 9mm cans and push it to it's limits.
And then we can see how much power it can take. And i am sure there is a lot more of these diodes out there waiting for us.
What's one diode lost, to the information we can learn.,::thinking:
 





Yeah, I learned they won't degrade. Still gotta be weary of dust though.

Anyway, I was using one of RHD's 9mm modules he had made a while back. I'll need to get another type with threading all the way to the top of the can.

Why.? Those should be fine. Your lens should still screw in. Its the same size as an Aixiz Module. I have one of my diodes pressed in to a modded Aixiz module and it works fine.

File off the last two or three threads on the lens holder and it should screw all the way down :beer:
 
Too late XD Already ordered a new G2 lens assembly. I didn't want to get rid of my current G2 anyway.
 
The diffusion of O2 in or other material out of GaN is very hush hush at LD manufacturing level. I will check again with my sources, and see what I can find out. I have heard of the degrading, but maybe the coatings are sufficient.
As far as the green sealant, it's even used on our $2 red diodes. it's green to indicate it's RoHS Compliant. I'm sure there is a very limited number of manufactures of the sealer, same with other diode components. Sold to the big LD makers by other suppliers of the individual components. One of our red diode suppliers was doing about 6 million of their labeled LD's per month back in 2007/08. Production wnet way down from there, but even then, they made about another 5 million parts for 2 well know LD maker's of Japan. They concentrate on wafer production and diode assembly, a cool automated process done in small, plastic covered robotic cells about 5X6 feet. I only got to enter 2 LD assembly clean rooms: one doing 3MM/ month, and the other 1MM/ mo. Even at these volumes, the LD components are supplied from outside.

Heh... with those numbers, we're really nothing more than a fly on the wall to them in terms of consumption.
 
Could one of you measure the diameter of the new lens?
Im curious if they are the exact same size as a g1 / g2 or slightly bigger / smaller.
 
Not sure about 'industry standard', but I know the G1 lens design has been around for quite a while, and several lens manufactures use the exact same design...

G2 is an example of the exact lens as G1.

In my comparisons, the lens from this new projector is so very close to the G1, that it would not surprise me at all, if it was the same exact design. Maybe they just changed the focal length a little or something...

Because visually it looks slightly different. G1 and G2 are visually the exact same except the coating.

Very close in performance to the 405-G-1...
 
Daguin asked me to take macro photos of this new diode with a macro lens. I am new to macro so this was my first real attempt. For those who care about such things, I used a Canon 7d with a 100mm f/2.8 IS L macro lens and about 50mm of extension tubes. I wasn't 100% satisfied with my results and need to read up more and practice more - but I think that I got some shots that will do for our needs now.

Dave also sent me an A140 and an M140 for comparison.

I am going to post up some of the basics, but also include links to the whole set of each diode so that anyone who wants to see more can go there and look at full size images with lots of different focus points.

For those who aren't familiar with macro, you end up with a very thin "slice" of focus and lots of bokeh (or blur) in front of and behind that little slice of focus. Because of this, I took many of the same photo, with just a very slight difference in focus so you could see a different part of the diode in focus.

If there is anything you would like to see, I will probably have these diodes until Monday, so let me know and I will try to get a picture of it!

9mm diode has 5 bond wires on the right and 4 on the left.

M-140 diode has 4 bond wires on each side.

A-140 diode as 3 bond wires on each side.
