I know some folks have started playing with extracting these from the new monolithic projector heatsinks, but it looks like Laserlands has them available loose (or already extracted).

Seems like a decent price, if someone could figure out a way to cleanly remove the ball lens. (I know there was a recent thread about these where someone did it, but I couldn't find it.) Anyone else played with these at all?

Newgazer has had those for sale for quite some time. Albeit those look like they are new, not pulls.

Yea I have some of these and they seem great. The only problem with them is you have to pull that can off(which does come off real easy) and that means making it an open can diode if you want to build a simple portable laser with it. This means any speck of dust gets in the module and you could loose the diode. Also there still seems to be some debate if the cans are filled with an inert gas that keep the diode from degrading faster than normal. If you are in a labby or projector you may be able to come up with some solution to add external optics to focus the beam but as they stand they have a flashlight like spread with the ball lens. @ 10 feet I would say it is about a 12 inch bar output.

I've removed several of the stock projector lenses from their holders. A two hour alcohol bath (ethyl) makes the job much easier. The alcohol will soften the glue and all that is needed after that is some careful work with pliers. I use two pairs and grasp on each side of the lens holder and just slowly twist back and forth until the metal breaks apart.
