Default Multiple diodes.

Hello. Is it possible to mount two Nichia NDB7875 445nm 9mm Laser Diodes into one heat sink? ( Where the body of the diodes are all connected.) I am machining a heat sink block from solid brass and mounting a beam combiner cube prism. I want to use separate drivers with a common lithium ion battery supply. Would this work? Ed.

yes, 9mm diodes are electrically isolated from the case.

Yes if you could figure out the logistics. I am pretty sure you could do a single driver and put the diodes in parralell as well. but i think you would have a BIG driver on your hands. A member just did this in a flashlight host and it is AMAZING. 6W of power in a handheld. though i think he used 2 26650 Li-ions as a power source.

Another way to go would be to put them in series and use an 18V rated buck driver run with a drill battery
pack.

Hello. Thank you for your comment. I am thinking of trying the DuraTrax LiPo 7.4V Onyx 5000mAh 25C Hard Case Battery as my power source. I'm not looking for long duration, only for a few seconds for demonstration purposes. Ed.

You're going to need at least 8.5V unless you use a boost driver(s). To run a boost driver over
5V, you would need a pretty deavy huty boost driver. Probably better to either go lower to
boost or go higher and buck

Okay, excellent. I would recommend going with a several 26650 or 18650 in parallel to give 3-4V and
plenty of current. I just noticed that you intend to use brass as a heatsink. Brass does not make a great
heatsink material. I recommend going with aluminum or copper if you can afford it. Good luck. Let us
know how it turns out.

Thank you. I can machine a solid copper one, and then heavy plate it in gold as well.
As soon as I can finish the components, I will try and post photos of them. Ed.

Don't bother with gold plating unless you're going to see it. That would indeed look awesome.

ED...See here...Tridentis 6.7W of Blue Beauty

Although these modules are knife edged...vs. combining in a cube.....at least the pics clearly show the heart of the combining area !!! THAT is where the hard part is !!!

Hopefully....you can see I used Aluminum for the side by side dual module mount !!! Superior to Brass for FAST heat dissipation to atmosphere....which is what you want !! Although Copper has the highest thermal storage properties....Aluminum is superior to dumping that heat to atmosphere....SOOOOoooo....the optimal arrangement....is to use a Copper module case for the 445 LD. The Copper being in direct contact to the diode...is really the best to..." WICK"/pull the heat away from the diode. THEN,....switch to Aluminum....and employ the superior properties of Aluminum to dump the heat to atmosphere. This is my understanding....and the way a typical heat sink is arranged to cool the main processor chip in a computer board.

Also...Copper is a real PITA to machine....a REAL PITA !!!

See this info from ARG...a member here....which I think (?) did the very first dual 445 via a PBS optic.... for what you are wanting to do !!!
https://sites.google.com/site/argsla...al-diode-laser

Join us in creating yet another new member to the "Combiner" class of hand held !!!

Two notes......your module elevation needs to be as close to equal as possible....and...use a flexmount for your steering mirror.
