Hi!

Just ordered a 445nm 9mm Diode In V4 Copper Module W/2.1A X-Drive Non Stock Lens Option with the 405 G2 lens from DTR.

The host I will be using will be suitable for 2 RCR123 or 1 18650!

DIY Stainless Steel Host Assembly, Extended and Tapered Heat Sink, Unmarked

I think 2 RCR123 will be the better option, when the description of the laser module says: Runs on two 3.7V Li-Ions

So at what ammount of current will the diode run with 2 RCR123?


Maybe a stupid question, but I`m new to all of this, so please be patient! :whistle:

That is a buck driver, so you will need two 3.7V cells to run it (7.4V), one 18650 will not provide enough voltage for operation. To run with one 18650 you need a boost driver, to boost the voltage up.

The driver is a constant current driver and it will run at 2.1A when running off of two 3.7V li-ion.

I also just found out, that a battery tube extension for this host is available!

With the extension it will be suitable for two 18650! Would you recommand that to me?

And another question! When it says on the akku 1000 mAh or 2400 mAh and so on, does this only mean how long it will last until I have to recharge or is there a diffrent in the output as well? Not volts but ampere.

Could my diode take damage in case I would use two 18650 with 4000 mAh, or will just the runtime be longer?

It looks like it will take a 18650 so you should be able to get a couple 16340's or possibly 2x 18350's which would be better if the host is long enuf. I have a saik I run 3x 14500's in and I tell ya that there is a very short run time with these 9mm diodes on the smaller batteries. so the biger the better my new 9mm build is in a bigboy host with 3x 18650 3400mah panasonics in series.

edit Also no the mah is how much the battery will hold for power. The driver will controle the current. you want the highest mah you can get for longer run times. you will also want High discharge batteries Like IMR's or the panasonics, sony's etc. Larry sells some awesome batteries. I wouldnt waste your money on Ultrafire or trustfire's. Good batteries will run ya about 8-14$ each.

16340's are the same size as CR123's
16340 is the designation of the 3.6V rechargeable
CR123 is the designation of the 3V primary (not rechargeable)
Some website mess that up, but in general that will work for you

16340, 18650, 14500, etc. are the measurements of the battery
The first two numbers are the diameter (in mm)
The next numbers are the length (in mm)
There is some debate as to the real meaning of the last number
Mostly it is used that the last 0 means that the battery is cylindrical

Since 2 x 34 = 68, usually you can use a single 18650 in place of two 16340's.
The same host will go either way
The decision is based in the driver you choose
Do you need >7V or can you use 3.6V?

The mAh rating is an "estimate" of the "capacity/reserve" of the battery
In theory, the higher the mAh, the longer the battery will support a particular current
In practice, these mAh ratings are EXTREMELY inaccurate

I mailed to survivallasers, if it would be possible to add the extension tube to my order, and it was no problem at all! :D

So I will go with two 18650!

I will watch out for the Panasonic rather than Ultrafire or something else!

The best cells you can use for that build would be Panasonic 3400mAh 18650 cells. They can support the current draw with ease and have insane runtimes. They are some of the few cells that the mAh rating is actually accurate on and often its actually conservative.

These are protected which means its much more difficult to ruin them by over charge or over discharge.

Ok, they are a little bit more expensive, but that`s not the problem!

Can they really catch on fire or even explode when unprotected?

And they look much better than the bright green one`s!

The ones I linked to are superior for this use. The PD model is a higher draw capability but the ones I linked to can handle 5A+ which is over twice what most lasers draw anyway, have a higher capacity and are protected so all around superior for this use.

It is possible for unprotected cells to catch fire or explode but that requires either extremely bad luck, a really lame charger, or a short circuit. The main thing about protected cells is that they are more difficult to damage from over charge and over discharge.

Do you mean superior to the PD model or the one I ordered?

I was especially looking to get NCR18650B and not NCR18650PD.

You got the right model but... if they were ~$36 USD then you massively massively massively overpaid. The links I showed you were for $19 and have free worldwide shipping for two cells. Shipping from them to the US takes less than two weeks. That's why I suggested that source. Also, the color of the cell doesn't mean much if its inside a laser... are they at least protected cells?
