Re: New 9mm 445 diodes

I believe 26650 cells also work in a 2C Mag. Though they are a little longer than Cs so there may need to be a little modification. I'm sure jayrob can advise you on this.

These are some of the most badass 26650 cells around:
$10.08 Feilong 26650 3.7V 4000mAh Rechargeable Li-ion Battery at FastTech - Worldwide Free Shipping

Or for 18650s these are the best of the best:
$19.01 Panasonic NCR18650B Protected Rechargeable 3400mAh 3.7V 18650 Lithium Batteries 2-pack - authentic cells / 2-pack / overcharge + over-discharge protection at FastTech - Worldwide Free Shipping

Re: New 9mm 445 diodes

Hi!

I already have the Panasonic NCR18650B, as you may remember, therefore my choice will be the 2C!

If they do not fit, I will go for 25500 I think! Jayrob has already sent me a link for these!

The 26xxx will need to bore out the tube and I`m trying at least to avoid that.

I hope the 18650 will fit after removing the spare bulb in the tailcap and maybe have the spring shortened a bit!

Re: New 9mm 445 diodes

A maglight build would be massively superior to the SL SS host. The heatsink would be significantly larger so your duty cycle would be longer.

There is nothing wrong with the SL SS host (or any of the smaller hosts for that matter), many people have used them successfully in their builds and are quite happy with them. It all depends on the purpose of your build. Not everyone needs or wants 5 minute+ run times and many prefer the portability of a small host. Personally, I almost never operate my lasers for more than 20-30 seconds at a time, and I don't like hosts that look like camping flashlights. ;)

Re: New 9mm 445 diodes

I agree with gary on this one. Although i find long duty cycles pleasant. It does not compete with portability and looks. I also never use my laser more then 30 seconds. Well only if i do a burning demo for friends or something.

It is all about personal preference. On thing is for certain. Size doesn't say anything about the quality... Man that sounds wrong lol :p :p

Re: New 9mm 445 diodes

If I wanted a long or unlimited run time, I would probably go with a plug-in lab-style build using a large heat sink and active cooling. That way, no need to be concerned with duty cycle or battery life.

Gotta agree with the SL hosts being great. The copper heat sinks have been taking very good care of my diodes. At 1.25A current the extended copper sink gives you several minutes of safe runtime.

Re: New 9mm 445 diodes

Hi guys!

Really bad news!

I managed to ruin the Maglite 2C right away as I were trying to remove that damn switch! :horse::twak::banghead::gj:

So back to plan A!!!

edit: Status Quo - Mag heatsink cancelled, battery board ordered!

I`m giong nuts!

Thanks guys. Like I said it's all about the purpose of the build, and what your expectations and requirements are.

Re: New 9mm 445 diodes

Hi!

I`m still happy with the SL SS host!

I only wish the battery board would be in the "Accessories" Section!

That would have saved me some nerves and 30 $ for a Maglite!

Anyway, I hope in 2 weeks everything will be delivered and I can get started to assamble the whole thing!

I have ordered this for my battery board, because it looked like there was much less to get rid of in comparision to the other link I got from ApexProxy!

PS: Gary, what`s your opinion or expierience about duty cycles at 2.1A with the SL SS host and the extented and tapered copper heatsink?

Thanks and Greetings

Re: New 9mm 445 diodes

Hey guys don't get me wrong I love the host and have one myself which has a painful amount of use. I wasn't intending to knock down the SL SS I was simply trying to tailor my suggestions based on what brunes01 appeared to desire which was extreme duty cycle and really the Mag build has that in the bag.

I have an M140 driven at 1.8A in the SS SL and I found if I am daring I can run it up to 90 seconds with 45 seconds off (the steel seems to take a little longer to cool than aluminum hosts). The 9mm at 2.1A will run reasonably hotter and personally I think its just a little too much for that sized heatsink which is why I agreed with your thoughts on the Mag. If you do go through with the 9mm in the SS SL then you really should take extra care on keeping your duty cycles short and giving it enough time to cool off.

For the contact board, you will have to relocate wires one you remove the components. It looks like the positive wire will still be functional but the negative will have to be moved out to the rim to those three little holes on both sides.

I've noticed this aswell, I think a large part of that is the black anodizing the aluminum has allowing it to dump a lot more heat through thermal radiation.

@ brunes01

I'd really recommend you push the diode around 1.25A. They are really efficient at the current and you'll get a lot less heat off it. I've had 1.25A and 2.1A builds side by side, the beam looks the same and when it comes to burning they both RAPE. I could only tell a difference when I did a side by side burn test and the one driven at 2.1A burnt the wood slightly more but barley. Go for efficiency, more photons per power :)

His driver is set already so unfortunately there isn't much he could do about that.

Re: New 9mm 445 diodes

Hi!

The thing is, I just don`t know what duty cycle I really will need, because I have no experience with high power lasers!

As I was told my duty cycle will be max. at 1 min, I was just a little bit surprised, because I have read the diode will have a duty cycle of 180 sec on and 20 sec of when proper heatsinked. At this time I had no clue what "proper heatsinked" really means!

Also I have no experience what a laser at that power will be capable of in 30 or 60 sec! And 30 sec sound not to be much, but can easily be underestimated! ;)

@ duke

I guess that`s not possible. I have it all preinstalled by DTR.

@ Apex

Thanks for that information I will try to keep it in mind. Don´t wonder if I ask again once the board has arrived!

Re: New 9mm 445 diodes

There is no hard defined line of "proper" heatsinking. The more heatsinking you have the longer the duty cycle will be. C6 size heatsinks are simply too small to get that long of a duty cycle.

Re: New 9mm 445 diodes

True, heat sinks are a bit of a guessing game. It can be reasonably defined though, check the case temperature on the data sheet and check the temps of the heat sink, the time it takes for the heat sink to near the case temp is your duty cycle.
