Default M140 445nm Build - 1.77A in a Custom Host

Hi all..

My newest build..

Its an M140 Laser Diode in a Aixiz Module at just about 1.8A
of current with a 405/445nm Three Element AR Coated Lens..

This laser runs on 2x 16340 (UltraCrap) Batteries..

I had this host I had made, It was the perfect host.. (Atleast in my idea)

A Custom Machined Copper MagicStick V2 with a Copper Focus Adapter
and a Custom Switch at the bottom...

Some pictures of the Build

The Driver:
I'm using a standard Cree 18v 5W Driver i had on hand , this already
gives 1.25A as it stands..However i always wanted to try modifying it!!

So i began to unleash my talents and started building

I Started off with a R500 1206 SMD resistor.. (Well you have to start
somewhere i guess)

I got this beautiful strip of SMD resistors i always wanted to test my
soldering skills on them

Step Two was to put it on the driver, Although it took some breath-in
breathe-out and slowly does it, I managed to get it in place and soldered
the new wires on..

Next Step was to connect the negative input of the driver to the host so i
came up with this rather simple idea of putting just the right amount of
solder on the side of this driver so it sits nicely in the driver compartment.

Now this driver goes in the host ..

Now time to put in some batteries and put it back togather and this is
what I got..

A Nice and Powerful Custom Build of my own..

The Result:

This build is Crazy bright.. About twice as bright as my other 445nm

Unfortunately I have no means to measure its power atm untill two
weeks from now.. I'll Update the LPM test..

Hope you guys like it.. Thanks for Looking and Happy Holidays !!!

Great looking build man

+1

I'm using two 1ohm smd resistors with the dx driver ... from where did you get this 0.5ohm resistor ? ...

Thanks Ahead !

Default Re: M140 445nm Build - 1.77A in a Custom Host

man , I think it was about a 375g chunk of raw copper 1" round barstock which practically quadruples the weight of aluminium heatsink used in the V2's and theoretically octuples the amount of heat it can absorb giving it as much as 8X Longer duty cycles..

The Improvement is the innards of the 12mm heatsinks are 11.75mm reamered and re-bored at higher speeds to give them a smoother more polished internal surface for least possible thermal contact resistance, So you feel the heat wicked away from the diode much earlier than you see in regular heatsinks..

This makes it pretty darn effective and i have seen much better results from smallest of heatsinks with just this method!

Stunning build! +1

Is there any advantage to using the Xboost other than being able to use a single li-ion cell?

Cheers and Merry Christmas from Korea.

Hey Ryan, The only advantage would be much better run times and user compliance.. Single battery, aswell..

Lets say i wouldnt have to deal with these shitty batteries anymore dying on me after every 15 minutes of use.. And the X-Boosts have low batt protection and some more protection features which makes it quite worthwhile..

The Panasonic 3400 will give me 4x the usage time (1h+) instead of 15minutes.

edit: And Merry Christmas to you too man..

Very nice build congrats !
With this heatsink you could also crank the amps to 2,0-2,1 with no problems some m140's will love the extra current some not ... who knows

With this heatsink you could also crank the amps to 2,0-2,1 with no problems some m140's will love the extra current some not ... who knows
Thanks

I never seen them pushed to that much current i think it will not last long , I think we are already pushing it to the Max recommended Limit..

There are higher versions of 445nm diodes like the 9mm Diode for that purpose.. Some push them upto 2.4A , They seem to be current happy

What do you suggest about bumping it up a little.. I think there wont be any significant increase in power though!

If you keep your diode cool/chilled 2A is definitely not a Problem with short duty cycles even 2,1-2,2A !
But not all diodes take advantages of the extra current you have to measure on your own !
However the expected lifetime will be shorter with >=2A of course !
How much depends on your heatsink and duty cycles

Best Regards

^ maybe a 9mm definitely not a m140. If so I would love to see you do it with your m140
