Default Re: List of 445nm diodes

If you see 5 amp current draw, your driver and/or battery are crapping out. Its not unlikely either, since many drivers were designed to drive lasers at much lower power levels, and the inductors on them go into saturation if you demand this much current from them.

You might reconsider switching drivers though.. 2 lithium cells in series and a good (not lm317) driver are a very good match here. With the batteries supplying about 7 volts and the diode taking a bit over 5, its a very good match for proper linear drivers. A well designed linear driver will not require more than 1.1 volt drop, so there is a bit of room to work with!

I am not sure if this is the exact same one you got T_J but I do have to say I really like it. The threading feels great and I really like the focus adapter. The clicky has a really smooth feel to it and the pill area has great space. Great work Ehgemus your build quality and look are second to none. I am just waiting on some diodes to get here to get it running and do a review.

Talking Re: List of 445nm diodes

Just finished my latest 445 and it's one of the sweetest hosts I've seen.

Side button clicky from Pontiacg5... (the side button material is a solid piece of stainless steel)

I had PM'd Pontiacg5 and he told me that he had scrapped the project for now, but that he had a host laying around...

He told me that it needed work to get it set up because it did not fit an 18650...

No problem... I just set it up for an 18500...

I also replaced the momentary switch that he included, with an 'on/off' clicky. I used the spring from the clicky and re-shaped it for fitting the bottom of the battery compartment to give tension for the 18500 battery...

Really nice clean work with the host and focusing adapter. Absolutely perfect once built.

I had to leave long leads from the diode pins, and then slide the switch/driver assembly in place, being careful not to let the wires get bunched up and in the way...

The assembly was a little tricky, but well worth it!

* A-140 diode
* Micro Boost at 1070mA's
* AixiZ 445 lens
* 930mW's

Thanks very much for that, it's really useful. I've just put together my first 445nm, using the same setup you have (A140, G1 lens, Micro Flex Drive V5). I don't have a laser power meter that goes up high enough, so I'm just measuring the current. I'm powering the Flex from 4x Alkaline C cells, and the most current I can get through the diode is 1.2A.

Is my choice of batteries likely to be the reason? I would have thought C cells would have a sufficiently low internal resistance?

Default Re: List of 445nm diodes

Where do you measure the current? Between battery and driver, or between driver and laser diode (NOT RECOMMENDED)?
I'm not familiar with the flexdrive, but I think the input current is NOT = the output current.

Also, remember that every diode has a different efficiency, so the correspondance of mA -> mW might not be the same for your diode.
