Over Christmas, I had a relative approach me and ask, "Hey, you know about lasers and stuff, right?" I nodded a quiet yes, and subsequently had a credit card in my hand with the instructions "I want a blue one. Make it burn stuff. Oh, and can it look like a lightsaber?"

Well, the last part made it easy. I hit up Lazerer and chose the Rifle 1 Watt, no special anything. Not having access to an LPM, I ordered their power certification for the value of having. I placed my order on December 24th, for $171 all together.

Here we are, January 13th, and I've got the laser! It spent a damn long time in a customs office, so I was worried, but hey! The laser gods smiled upon me!

I tore open the package, and was elated that my new...

Green Laser Pointer was here... This better be a mistake. Or just lazyness. At any rate, I popped open the box and found that everything was just kinda rammed wherever it fit. Somehow, it all does fit in one box. It took me a few minutes to get it all in there, but it does fit.

Note to self: get new case.

Inside, you can see that the diode appears to be glued in place, then wrapped with foam of some kind. I poked it a few times, and it seems to be set in there decently, so I won't bother with it.

A problem I DO have, however, is how poorly the batteries fit. It's like this host is designed for some other kind entirely! It's supposed to use 16340's, but my 18350's fit much better. Of course, that's ~800mAh extra current, so I didn't actually try using it. You can see (somewhat) what I mean:

Once I stopped dicking around and put it all together, I placed it on my mat (as usual, with a 1" grid) and really started to appreciate the host. It's very lightsaber-y, feels solid, and is a nice size in your hand.

The beam it self is... stunning. For those of you who have never seen a 1 watt 445 beam in person... pictures can not do it justice. But, beamshots are sexy, so here's two:

In a well-lit room, still flaring heavily in the camera lens.

A darkened room, the beam is just beautiful.

I mentioned that I got their "Power Certificate" out of curiosity, and it is only QUESTIONABLY worth the $5 they tack on for it. But, if it's accurate, and I don't see why they'd just make these up, this particular laser has a peak of 1002mw after a warm up of 25 seconds from cold.

As a conclusionary thought, I'm pretty depressed that I have to let this thing end up with someone else, and I might just be getting one for myself in the future.

Here's an album with all the pictures.

Nice pics, I don't see any mention of protection goggles though. There are protection goggles, right?

That isn't the diode that is glued in place, it is the spring contact for the module. I'm sure the rest of the internals are nice and secure.

Yes, it did come with some orange-tinted goggles. Forgot to mention them, but I suppose it would have been a good thing to note!

I did say diode. Crap. Well, you're right!

Only from a moderate distance, or outside. Unfortunately, I've already delivered this to its new owner, so I can't get a picture, but the dot was quite clean, with a slight rectangular artifact off to the side if you were looking for it. I think I was pretty lucky with it.
