How is the single 18650 handling boosting a 445nm @4.4 amps?

I imagine the current draw to be problematic for the switch and points of contacts that have high resistance.

Good job though

Hey wannaburnstuff ! It's a 3.5w diode installed in a DTR front half diode module.
Two Rick Trent solid copper back halves soldered together back to back.
Heat sink for bench top testing a module from EBay mounted to the copper module holders protruding from the back of the stock heat sink.
Two Lazeerer SXB`s left on low range, each one set to 2.2a .
Thermal epoxied one to lab heat sink. Thermal epoxied the other to home built mount from 1" aluminum from Lowe's.
Placed heat sink on lower driver chip to act as spacer.
Wired with Flaminpyro wire.
Modified a single cell Zero Laser host from DTR so battery contact board would stop melting down .
Running one Panasonic 18650.

Hey DTR ! Thanks for your insight ! With a fresh charged battery, when first powered up it draws 6.5a then drops down to 5.5a . I need to do more testing at different charge levels.

Hey Will Manners ! The single Panasonic does surprisingly well. Gets slightly warm The tail cap switch is about to melt down.
Your concerns are justifiable.

Kodus Dude, you did it!!!!! Very nice 5.5 watts of blue goodness.
I'll bet runtime is a little dodgy with only one 18650, but still congrads on an
epic build and achievement. Color me green with envy. :>)

Thanks Down with Umbrella ! Yes, it's been a learning experience. I should write a book "How not to build a laser". I should have named it Phoenix since it arose from the ashes

Hey COMMANDR ! Last night I carried an extra battery with me and swapped them out when I took it outside to play with it. My battery monitor is suppose to show up today. I think a host with a 26650 and a good clicky switch would work well. This laser is kind of like me, stupid crazy with no logical explanation for existing.

Thanks sinner ! It's been a fun build ! Now I can start my builds in those beautiful copper hosts ! It does seem like great times ! I'm learning and the diodes keep getting crazier !

Disassembled the tailcap to see if I could do anything to help it. I took the brass contact and soldered it to the center contact spring. Took the outer spring and soldered it to the aluminum housing and to the ground ring of the contact board. The tailcap doesn't heat up anymore and my output is up to 5.6w. I know that didn't help the rating of the contacts in the switch but maybe it will let it run long enough to test the best lens for it I'm thinking about trying to adapt a McClicky switch over to this host.

Tried about 20 different lenses. 5.6w with a G2 is as high as I can get. It's a G2 lens from Survival Lasers and it's not the first build I got the highest output with their lens. I wish I knew why. I get 4.4w with a 3 element. That's the lens I'm running on it. The beam/spot looks so much better in my opinion with the 3 element it's worth the sacrifice of the output reading on an lpm.

I disassembled it far enough to inspect the wiring and all looks good. My clicky switch lives so far I have pieces coming to try and upgrade it. If I can't make them fit I'm going to build a switch out of a solid copper contact and just twist the tailcap to turn it on and off.

The green Panasonic 3400mah 18650 with protection does surprisingly well. I have an Orbtronic which is suppose to be the same battery I thought, but it gets warm where the protection circuit is and will shut off. I have some high drain unprotected Panasonics on order to test it with.
To install the battery monitor I will have to modify the circuit board. I found a smaller battery monitor that I'm going to try before I modify the one I have.

The wiring doesn't melt. The drives don't get hot. I have a battery that works good. Get the tailcap modified and a way to monitor the battery and this will be a really nice laser. Surprises me actually it turned out this nice. With a 3 element lens this thing is still a burner like I can't believe.

So if somebody wants to build one like it, it actually works I would recommend using a host that can hold a 26650 if you want your battery to last more than about 15 minutes of runtime < that's a guess, I haven't actually timed it.

If something goes bad or gets better I'll report back

Very, Very nice IW !!! You have got me to thinking !!!! My next build will be in this class...or maybe just one higher....The MOST photons...OUT the Front Door.....with a single 18650 or 26650.... using a Single non-C-mount LD. SOooo...the single cell 18650 or 26650 is the " Restricter Plate " for us !!!!!!! hahaha !!

The Tridentis is nice....BUT...Looks like one is about to step up to the plate....meaning TOoooo Big. With this new HP 445...that is at LEAST...a somewhat reasonable price....That will be the LD of choice !!!!

Soooo...THANX for the inspiration !!!!! and !!!!!!!! This will be my "New Hill" to climb....you already are standing at the summit !!!

Anyone have ANY thoughts on a beefy host to use which takes a single 26650 ??????
I think I have searched before....and NOT found much !!!!!!

Thanx again for the inspiration !!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks CDBEAM ! It will be nice to see one built by someone who knows what they are doing I have had this thing stripped down twice because I thought I had a driver problem The front battery contact has held up since I modded it. I just finished rebuilding the tail cap.
Hopefully everything can take the current now.
A super duty host and a 26650 battery would make this really sweet.
It's not bad the way it is. Just had to work through some issues.

Hahaha....When you find...someone....who knows what they are doing..let me know !!!!...At Terrawatt Labs...we have the SAD mantra of..." Smoke'em if ya Got'em" ....WAY TOooo many times...Diodes,drivers, switches...etc.....ALL can be be" Low lying Fruit"....that is for sure....Heck...a month ago....Master DTR himself...cooked the magic smoke outa that new Oclaro !!!.. SOOOooo much of this is trial and error ...A huge dose of problem solving and...the will to make things happen !!!

This Hobby WILL humble you....and it is only a matter of time....before....it " WILL kill you....and eat your eyes as JuJu beads " !!! HAHAHAHAHA

But....the point is ...It is NOT the destination....but the fun and challenge of the journey ( Que the Fife and Drum Music)....Blah, Blah, Blah....and Blah.....So sez I !!!

Since this Super 445 is available....I think it would be an interesting project to cram it into the smallest package possible....but....still using a low priced one (1) cell 26650 host. No down beam optics....well...maybe a small one !!!

Lazereer.......Lazereer....YOU have been summoned !!!! Is your new super driver a Boost ??????? Can I use it with ONE (1) 26650....and let the "5W Blue Geenie" outa a small bottle ??????

I have found a few hosts...under $ 20 to putz around with.....Now.....just gotta figure out how to get the rest !!!!!

IW...To me....sounds like this unit was NOT originally set up to handle SOOoooo much amps.....so....the weakest link in the chain fails....first....and then....if there are other ...lesser...weak links....they may also fail in time. Dunno......But...I surly bet your build will inspire MANY other builds....Thanx

Well...Hard to believe...but I just won a bid for 8 bucks on Fleabay for a interesting looking single 26650 host !!!
This unit looks like a small clone of the Sky King host used in the Tridentis build !!!Bet it comes from the same factory !!!

Will the side switch hold up ??? Dunno.....But for 8 bucks....why not !!! Maybe they make a mini-Angel eye switch ???????

I was searching thru the -Flashlight 26650 area....and this one poped up with less the 4 min on the auction !! Beat the next guy by 25 cents... !!!! HahahahahAHAHAHAHAHAHA !!!

....a stink'en quarter !!!!!I just luv to do that....no automation either....just a game of chicken !!! SLAM down a bid with less than 10 seconds in play !!!!!!!!! One of life's cheap ...yet satisfying victories !!! !MMMMM....Good !!! What a hoot !!! Hmmmmm...Seems it does not take much for me to get my Jollies !!! Just the simple things !!!

See the pic....140mm long x 40mm dia.....We will see !!!! One can ALWAYS use yet another non-coherent projector !!!!...if it is not suitable for a build host !!!

It was labeled as " Model B051T" . Gold would not be my color of choice....but....oh well !!!

WoW...Just WoW !!!!..THANK YOU !!!! I have one word for ALL THIS....

........" SYNERGY "....!!!!!!!

DE FACTO....Combined....we are a " LAB " spread all around the world....with NO regard to boarders, gender, age, ....or EGO.

We are held in a kinda similar quantum orbit.........no doubt....bound by a common respect for each others contributions , talent's and passion ....all interested in helping one another. We have some BS moments...BUT....we do amazing things together !!! The Worlds politicians should do 1/10 as good !!! Fat Chance !!!

Thanx for this solution....to a problem I will VERY likely have !!!!!

Lite'em Up CDBEAM=======>

Awesome!

Also, where might one get these Rick Trent solid copper back halves for a 12mm module? They sound useful, but I can't seem to find them..
