Default I'm going to build a 1.8W Laser, I'm AFRAID.

I saw and read all of the stories about the damage that laser can cause to the eyes.
Of Course I bought a goggles , But still I'm afraid from reflactions, and I don't know his power yet.

I don't know what is a safr distance, and what will be the damage if I'll do it on a white wall a 1 meter from me, a 2 meter from me and so on.
Also, if I'll do it into a high building, into the window, I afraid it will make a reflaction to my eyes, or worst: It will be a man that will go out to check what's going on and it will go into his eyes. ( Of COURSE I won't do that thing, but IF ? There are mistake in our world )
Also, if I'll be with goggles and will be a reflaction to my eyes ? What will be the damage ?

I need that you'll calm me, that you'll tell me what to do.
I wanna know what is a " Safe Distance " to do that laser without goggles, and what isn't.

After all, that laser is beautiful: Beam shot, burnings and so on.

Thanks,
Lior .

Default Re: I'm going to build a 1.8W Laser, I'm AFRAID.

I'm not sure if you're blatantly telling us that you want to be spoon fed and be sung a lullaby to sleep, but I'll give it a shot.

A blue 1.8W beam is definitely dangerous, especially without goggles. A reflection off a window is enough to blind you, even at long distances; that's why a pair of goggles is absolutely necessary.

A scattered reflection off a white wall at one meter or two will be very very bright. I personally wouldn't recommend you to stare at it.

I certainly hope you won't shine it into anyone's eyes if you're living in a building. You will be facing a lot of $$ out of lawsuits. Don't point it at planes either. I'm sure you won't.

A safe distance depends on the surface you're pointing the laser at, but with 1.8 watts, you can't have your goggles off indoors. Outdoors, you could live without your goggles, but don't hit any retroreflectors used in traffic signs as they will reflect the beam straight back at you. Again, avoid airplanes.

BUT, I strongly recommend you start off with a low powered green pointer if you're not used to high powered lasers. A 50mW greenie would definitely be a good stepping stone before you play with the big boys.

Have fun but be safe!
Cheers!

Well, first thanks a lot for your comment!
I'm not leaving in a building, but there are a lot buildings in my area that I can direct at them. ( Won't, but IF .. )
Also, if I'll do it in my room? Indoor I mean. OR maybe in my house ?
There are a lot videos that people do that to show their beam and so on.
If I'll put goggles I won't see nothing. Almost the dot, and nothing from the beam.
I don't want that. I won't see nothing of the laser ... That's really scary.

What's the point of the laser, if not to do some burnings and things like that ?
Show him to the friends, and so on ?

For beginners, like ryan said, you will totally appreciate a 50mW greenie, if you can get one... that being said you could get yourself in a heap with one of those also. Maybe you should take up a 660nm DYI. If you could get the build together then you would know through trial and error that these are not toys, but dangerous units of shear maneating awsomeness

Well, with the building a good friend will help me. He had built a lot lasers and also sold some here.

I had a 30mW green pen laser and then a SD-301 one, 100mW laser. So I have some expirience with lasers, but not at building them, and not in that powers.
That's why I'm so afraid to use it I afraid that it will be reflactions, mistakes, or things like that. Even that I'll do it in the white wall in my room. :\

If you were able to handle a 100mW green responsibly, and you own safety glasses for Blue, then 1.8W shouldn't be a problem for you.
I assume you are responsible? Also you are aware of the dangers of lasers, right? So just be careful and don't give it to anyone that is careless or very young, and you should be fine.

Default Re: I'm going to build a 1.8W Laser, I'm AFRAID.

Yeah, I had a SD-301 100mW as well, but I'm pretty darn sure they're more like 50mW.

But anyways, a 1.8-2W laser won't be too much of a trouble if you're sensible and careful.

If you don't swing your laser like a lightsaber, you can avoid shining it out the window. Perhaps have curtains down if you're playing with it; that should block it from shining out the window.

In my opinion, handing a 2W laser is an exciting experience. Once you burn matches and black tape, you'll be fully aware of its potential.

Enough said. I'd recommend you (and your buddy) to go for it!

Again, just be sensible and you'll be fine.

Cheers!

Default Re: I'm going to build a 1.8W Laser, I'm AFRAID.

Thanks a lot again, both of you !
The 100mW go into my eyes a few times, but not from too close, it just was really bright, it didn't cause any damage for my eyes.
Also, if I directed ( by mistake ) to me friend's face from something like 30-40 meters, they just put their hands on the face and said " Stop ", it didn't cause any problems.
OF COURSE I didn't do anything of that deliberately, and it happened only once, but I'm still afraid.
If it would happen with a 1.8W laser, it could blind them. That's really scary.
Also, with my green lasers I direct them to a Signboards that in the roads, it was really cool to see how bright it was.
I read that with a 1W+ that's really dangerous. That's why I afraid.
They are not in the same power. Things that I didn't afraid to do with my 100mW one, now I don't know what I can and what I can't.
With my 100mW, away from burning some stuff, I didn't put my goggles never. ( indoor, outside and all of that )

Of course I'll be carefull, but I'm still afraid that I'll have one mistake. That's enough.
With my 100mW I could do it in my room, on white walls in my room, in the corridor, my house.
With the blue one ... I afraid to do in buildings that 300 meters far away from me. ( Windows and so on )

Thanks again for trying to relax me.

Sorry, but your comments above make me wonder if a +1 W laser is a good idea for you. A lot of what you wrote is dangerous even with a 100 mW laser, let alone a 100 mW green with a reasonably good divergence...

Yeah, try not to point the 1.8W at anyone's face, because this time, you won't have a second chance.

Of course I won't.
Also with the 100mW it happened just 1 time, and it was for less the 0.5 sec.
I just wondered what will be with a 1.8W one, but I knew that already.
I'll avoid to do this indoor, but that's afraid to know that I can't go with that laser to the street, and direct some close buildings, because I don't know if from 50-100 meters it will have a reflaction direcatlly to my eyes, or to the home owner's eyes.

Because of that, actually I can't do with the laser nothing right ?
The options are: Or goggles, or directlly to the sky, to the moon.

I don't really know what will happen if I'll do it in the street, in my home, what and where will be a reflactions, and so on.
That's really scary, actually.
Btw, I'm not a little kid at all, I don't want you to think that I am, but that hobby is a little bit new for me. ( The "High" powered lasers, my first one actually )
Sorry for having so much questions and "troubles".
Thanks again for all of you.

We're not here to relax or calm you and tell you that everything is gonna be fine, just give you the opportunity to gain some knowledge. You've said that your afraid several times in this thread, if your that afraid then don't get one.

Ill to him is no ill, but only good in a mysterious form. Losses enrich him, sickness is his medicine, reproach is his honour, death is his gain. No evil in the strict sense of the word can happen to him, for everything is overruled for good. Happy is he who is in such a case. So you didn't understand me.
I'm not a stupid little kid, AT ALL. I just said that this is my first REALLY HIGH POWERED laser, and everyone here had sometimes in life his first high powered laser, so now this is my turn.
I just wanted know a few things about the safety of it. And GUESS WHAT ?
If I wasn't mature enough for that, so I wouldn't post that thread and talk about it, RIGHT ?
I'm talking about it before I built the laser, because I wanna be ready for that.
So plesae, don't say and stupid thing, for me.

If you'll can help more someone, it will help.
Thanks.

just use common sense....always wear goggles inside (everyone in the room needs them).....and be careful outside,1. make sure no planes are around 2. keep the laser away from reflective material 3. dont shine it at people/animals....i think you made the mistakes with the 100mw cause you didnt know it could do serious damage too. please be safe and treat it like a gun, store it with the batteries out and hidden
