Alright, I've caved and I'm gonna buy a multi-mode. Would I be better off buying the PLTB450 over the M140 or no?

HAHA that's your decision. M140 wins power, but loses on beam specs. There's some things we can only help with but cant give answers

I was assuming you'd make the decision based on the preferences I have given above. But from what you said, it looks like I want to get the PLTB450

There is not much appreciable difference in the beam profile of the two diodes once focused to infinity. The M140 is cheaper and I think this is the winner here.

"1.7W 445nm Copper Blue Laser Module W/X-Drive & Three Element Glass Lens" it is then. So will one 18650 be enough to power this beast?

The power might drop with just one cell. You're better off with a couple 16340 or 18350.

Is there no way to manage that in this host? Or will I have to find a different host to be able to get the full potential out of the diode?

EDIT: By the way thank you so much for putting up with all my novice questions. I just couldn't help simply asking them instead of hitting that search button as I've already spent hours searching just to get to the knowledge level that I am now xD

Get this instead. It's the same host but without the emitter and it's cheaper.

C6 DIY Cree LED Flashlight Full Casing/Shell with Driver Pill (2*CR123A/1*18650) - Free Shipping - DealExtreme

Two 16340 or 18350 will work. Just make sure you get unprotected 18350 so that they will fit. Max battery length that fits the C6 is around 70mm.

Edit: Dont buy your batteries from China/HongKong. It will be returened to sender. I think DX has an Australian warehouse. Try searching for the host and batteries there instead.

Would 2 protected 16340 be okay? If so are there any specific chargers that you would suggest, because I've read around and seen lots of warnings about dodgy chargers

I've edited my post above.

Protected 16340 might work. Which ones are you planning to buy?

As for the charger, the Nitecore i2 and i4 are solid choices.

This looks like it'll do the trick. I noticed the edit, I also edited mine before yours if you didn't notice

Those are iffy cells. I suggest you get an Efest IMR 18350 instead.

Thats pretty ironic considering that Ultrafire was the brand making the host I was going to use xD I feel kind of uneasy about using unprotected batteries after reading about the difference. Will the issues involved with using unprotected batteries not apply when being used in a laser vs. a flashlight?

Ultrafire, trustfire and all other fires out there are like generics. Everyone uses them.

The cells I suggested are IMR. This chemistry is inherenty safe. They don't catch on fire or explode if mishandled.
