H1600 - Possible higher-powered 445s? Not just a new "model number" this time

Worth a glance:

What's interesting, is that this sounds like more than just a new "model". They're expanding their line to include two new "short throw" versions (zzzzz...) as well as a "Pro" line of "high brightness" projectors (that has my attention!) for rooms with "significant levels of ambient light". 3500 lumens! (instead of the 130/140's mere 2000/2500, lol)

And these ARE still the hybrid laser projectors we love

I don't think they will lase at a different wavelength - and I only say that because we would have known about the diode ahead of time. At this point, enough people are watching press releases and other updates from companies like opnext, nichia, and even weird ones like soraa, that I think we would have at least heard hint of such a diode first. While there are a few weird blues from Nichia (488 if I remember correctly), they're low mW (like 60), so not actually a good upgrade for a projector.

Of course there could be some fluctuation within the +/- range for the diodes as is (which I think goes up to 455nm based on specs)

What I COULD see potentially happening, is the inclusion of those new green diodes we've heard about. I don't know enough about these projector guts, but it wouldn't shock me if including green laser diodes would also improve the blue brightness, since I think blue lasers are semi-used for the green light at present, by means of a fluorescent excitation of some sort.

But if that's not the case, I think they probably DO need more or better diodes. This is about double the brightness of the A130, which I believe runs them at 500mW each. I can't see KasEo simply running the same diodes at double intensity... seems like that's the kind of irresponsible stuff WE do, but not great practice for a warranteed product?

I don't think it will have a green diode based on reviewing the little diagram in this: http://www.greenslimprojector.com/resource/pdf/pro_series_npi_3_28_11.pdf

My guess it that these will be the "cream of the crop" 130/140 diodes in terms of "binning" them. I agree with rhd in that if there was a new diode we would have heard about it by now. I hope im wrong though

Something occurred to me - they use red LEDs. Why?

Are they using red LEDs because they're better than red laser diodes? Or because LEDs are preferable period, but blue LEDs aren't good enough yet?

They reason it matters, presumably the ultimate destination for this tech is either all LED or all laser. It would be awesome if we got red lasers in future revisions, but such if they ditched the lasers.

One LED would seem preferable from their perspective to 24 lasers.

They were changing the layout of the diodes and subsequently the knife edge mirror assembly. I would be more inclined to simply believe that they found a way to get more out of what they already have (in the projectors).

I thought I remembered reading here sometime ago, that they ( Nichia? ) Had announced the development of a 4 watt diode. Dose anyone remember this?:thinking:

Yeppers - it was them. Plus I believe part of that announcement was a 750mW single-mode blue diode - which I'd almost be more excited about than a 4W.

Having said that, remember that our current 445s are supposedly 1W, but can obviously go almost double that.

So a 1.5W single mode would be awesome as would an 8W multimode!

(though no reason to think either of those are in this projector)

If they're already getting 3000 lumens from the A150, they would not have to drive the diodes much harder to achieve 3500. Plus, they have more developmental and field experience at this point.

What doesn't make sense to me -

If red can be achieved with an LED, why can't blue and green too? Why combine literally 3 different colour source methods, when LED must be the cheapest of all, and all three colours are available as high powered LEDs.... ?
