I know, pretty crappy to have been a member for two years, and first now have completed my first real build (except a LPC in an aixiz that died within 2 min) :)

Anyways, it's nothing special, just an XJ-A130 @ 850 mA in a Jayrob 18650 kit.
It has a copper heatsink.

The first time I assembled it and turned it on, nothing happened. Needless to say, I nearly shit my pants. So I disassembled it and hooked the diode up to a spare rkcstr, while repeating "Oh shit, oh shit, oh shit" in panic.
I saw a faint blue light, as if the diode was LED'd, and I nearly shit my pants for the second time. Then I turned the pot and realised it was just below treshold current. The diode was fine. Phew!

So I wondered what was wrong with the jayrob kit. And then I tested the battery, and it read 0V. Ah.
So I charged the battery and assembled the laser again, and this time it worked perfectly.

I don't have a (powerful enough) LPM but it should be outputting close to 800mW. The color is a beautiful bright blue. The beam is clearly visible even in lit rooms, I don't have much to compare it with, but it's definately not too far behind my 200mW green module in brightness.

I was hoping for a bit better burning abilities, but oh well. It burns much better than any other laser I own, of course. But I couldn't light a match the hard way, or burn paper very well. It burns holes through both, but it doesn't ignite it :/

Here's some pictures (barely any smoke) :

PS: Unfortunately I didn't build this for myself, but for some other guy from Norway. I'm going to forward the laser tomorrow.

Congrats, nice build. Glad your diode didn't fry ;)
Are you using a Flexdrive or a microboost ?
With that copper HS may be you could grow up the ma's keeping a shorter duty cycle.
About burning... you have to choose... But I think that at 850ma it will put more like ~700ma. That is a pretty setup for a more long living diode, I always keep prudent the first builds of a diode. Particularly I HATE that my first build for a new diode gets fried in the first days when diodes are expensive or hard to find.

Great first build! What goggles are you using? (if any because you're sending this one off) Reason why I ask is because I saw your comment on YouTube and I want to link to good goggles.

You mean those $8 focalprice anti-green goggles ? So they really are good against 445 too ? That would be too good to be true !

One of those focalprice goggles is the same as my Optotronics goggles that I use for my 445nm lasers.

what driver are you using? and you are luck that you had a battery read 0v and it was still able to take a charge. i've had a couple do that but most of the time they are completely dead. nice build man!!

Congrats! Looks pretty great.

On another note, scale your images down! It is unnecessary to have them that big.

Yeah, if you can see the "grain" in your photos, they're usually too big, especially for a forum.

Heh, sorry about the images. I'll scale them down next time.

I'm not actually sure what driver it is :D
I got the hot option, so it's the one Jayrob put in there. The microboost or flexdrive.

Yeah Norway! Norway rocks! Grix is a great member of this forum. I sent an amplifier to Oslo, last year. It was an audiophile type that he received pro-bono and built 75% by me and 25% by another audio engineer. Kudos! Repped you for that one mate!
