Default First custom 450nm handheld ###pictures alert###

After days on the books I finally found some spare time to share my first experience with a "real" handheld build. As I said in my welcome thread, I'm not new to the laser world, so I wanted to go straight on a custom device, instead of modifying a torch or things like that. Anyway, this is the result.

Components:
  • An Osram PL-TB450B 450nm diode: not as powerful as an M140, but considering the compact size of the host 1.6W has a reasonable power/heat ratio. The beam appears to be quite tight, it cuts with great precision if well focused, and its color seems, at least to me, not too much but noticeably brighter than the usual blue.
  • An adjustable X-Boost driver by Lazeerer.
  • G-2 lens.
  • 5A forward clicky switch.
  • Enerpower+ 3400mAh ICR 18650 battery.

As you can see, I was really impressed by Ehgemus' concept of plain but functional hosts. The unit breaks in three parts (minus the battery):

The module is a custom machined direct press head type, with an electrically and thermically insulated compartment for the driver. It's full copper, quite bulky, but fast like hell to dissipate and to channel the heat through the aluminum body.

Switch module with interchangeable tailcap.

Lens and battery.

So this is it, some might say it's a bit minimal in its design, but that was the idea to begin with. I'm not sure about an eventual superficial treatment yet, I'm more interested in a scratch repellent anodization, while my old man is only waiting for me to show up at home to polish everything. Thanks to DTR for the previous help and the three main components, I waited for an X-Drive, and ended up using it on another project of mine. That said, I'm totally open to suggestion, questions, and mostly critics.

P.S.: Unfortunately my power meter had some issues, so I'm not able to give any technical working data about the diode, but I'm posting some beams as soon as my battery is fully recharged (I got a little carried away last night).

Nice and clear 1st build pic intro. I prefer cleaner laser hosts designs myself, minimalistic case definitely has its own charm. Please post some more beam magic this beauty of yours can offer, when you get a chance (as promised).

Good quality battery you have there, I happen to own one as well. Should give you solid power performance and photons-to-be-watched joy.

Looks very clean for a first build, congrats!
I have to admit that there are very skilled machinists on this forum!

Well, I have to admit that I'm just the designer, my old man is the real machinist. That's why he wants so badly to polish the all thing, anodizing isn't something you do with your bare hands.

Nice custom build, Alex! Being minimalistic is what makes this baby stand out from the rest. Congrats to you and your dad!

Waiting to see those 450nm beams. Also, can't wait to see what your next project will be.
