This first post here is mostly irrelevant now, please see my newer post below #4, just didn't want to start a new thread for the same diode. And the picture was hosted on a personal server whose static IP has changed and I'm too lazy to update the DNS records right now. In fact the picture would probably just distract from my new question. . . . Can an open can M140 survive?




Below is the original from months ago.

This is a shot of just the diodes output without a lens.

Formally it was a nice rectangular shaped fairly evenly disturbed light in slight bands, as on out the outside. Now it's just a blob mess in the middle.

Putting the lens on and the best it will focus to is a blob dot of about a couple inches with a bright spot in the middle.

If there's nothing on the diode window or your lens, then I would say yes, it is dead.

Is there a safe was to clean the window on the diode can? Rubbing alcohol and a qtip? Photography lens wipes and solution?

Going to necro my own post.

The original picture I believe is gone, but what it was was the diode with out collimator showing the rectangular diode output but in the middle was a big blotchy mess and it wouldn't collimate properly, just a mess.

Last night I was bored, had just got my package from Survival Laser with a 1.25a drive, c6 host, heatsink, basically what's needed sans diode. Put the pieces together and thought about that "dead" m140 diode. Using a 30x jewelers loupe I could see a spot on the diode window that was probably something that had gotten in a burned on, I don't know. I don't know if there's a proper way to do this, probably is, but I used a dremel on a low slow setting and the most thin cutting disc I could find and removed the can / window from the diode. Pressed the diode in a heatsink, dropped it in the new parts from survival, and bam the damn thing works perfectly again.

So I have an open can M140. Can I expect that to actually last, or having removed the can will it die quickly?

The dot is irrelevant, unless it's the new dot after can removal, in which case it's perfect. As I said there was a mark on the diode window, which was removed with the can. The question was if an open can (which it now is) M140 will survive.

Open can diodes work fine- the only thing that the case has is a tiny little "window" that keeps dust/ debris out. It should work fine :)

In terms of it like catching on fire or melting or something like that, it wont happen because it is de-canned.

Thank you, that's pretty much what I was looking for. I've used open can diodes, the lpc's, I've just never removed the can from a diode and then ran it.
