Damn. I was aware that those diodes were pretty expensive when sold individually, but I had no idea that it was still several thousand dollars each.

Hmm.. i have my doubts about this whole story, getting a sort of "pics or it didn't happen" response.

If there is epoxy on the diodes themselves, removing them will certainly prove more difficult, but perhaps not impossible. I'll have to see pictures of the problem to say anything sensible though.

And for the potting epoxy I think a dremel with a small drill bit and some finesse could take care of this.
Uh, duh. Of course they care, and not in a positive way.

Morons and idiots raising hell with 2 watt handhelds may well lead to these devices being more tightly regulated or banned. That's going to hurt their bottom line or worse. Especially if people like C*sio end up getting sued, even if they are only indirectly responsible.

Default Re: Casio seems to be potting projectors

They have added more. the screws to get the laser arrays our are no longer normal screws tri wing Philips or flat.
They are some weird blob looking ones that look like they are put on the squeezed by a machine to stop them from being taken out.
But a very quick flat line cut with dremmel will let you take it out.
There are a few other things. but new to the projectors that dont matter as they are for other parts.
As far as the laser array goes there are 3 screws to get it out and then about 12 to get the lasers out.
The problem and doubt that they used epoxy is this.
The op stated ho took it apart and saw that he could not get into the lasers.
Well one he would had to have removed the new screw and that right there would have voided warranty seeing tools marks on the those screws.
They look like hex head that then got squeezed by something and almost looked like a rivet.
So if you are unsure about whos doing your extraction then dont buy from them.
The game is changing. but some of us still have the tools to keep up.
In a way it nice to know they care enough to try to stop us. The only thing it does is make the people who learned and have the tools less competition.
It would be a bad idea for someone never done it or without a good amounts of tools to go and try to do the extraction.

In enthusiast quantities, they run into the thousands of dollars apiece. Only once you've proven to Nichia that you have skills, wisdom, product(s) and a market for those products can you even begin to talk to them (or most other diode manufacturers) about bulk pricing.. but once you do get bulk pricing, it can be as cheap as a few dollars each. They are prohibitively expensive for the purposes of keeping enthusiasts and "riff-raff" from being able to easily acquire them, since they are dangerous in the wrong hands. It's all about liability.

This is a little off-topic, but are the diodes patented by Nichia? If not, then there's a good chance that they'll become very easy to obtain within the next few years.

The technology behind all GaN light-emitting devices was developed by Shuji Nakamura et al at Nichia. While I'm not 100% sure how the patent and intellectual property rights break down, I do know that Nichia is exceedingly zealous about protecting their IP. Dr. Nakamura is no longer with Nichia as a result of this zealousness, and the story that unfolded between them is a soap opera. I'm nearly 100% certain that Nichia gets payed by each and every company that makes blue LED/LDs, and will continue to do so for a very long time.
