Default Build: 445nm 1.7W Skyray

Hey all, so I'm building a laser, just got the diode in today, so now I decided to do a build thread with pictures.

ZeroLasers have been backed up like nothing else, so originally the host was going to be ZL's Skyray Host, but with the backlog I also ordered a Survival Lasers S4 Host with a copper heat sink. I'll save the Skyray for a different build, but I'll keep the name the same because Skyray sounds cool.

Status:
  • Diode: DTR's M140 DELIVERED
  • Driver: 1.7w X-Drive DELIVERED
  • Host: Survival Laser's S4 Host Kit DELIVERED
  • Batteries: 2x Ultrafire 18650 DELIVERED
  • Charger: 2x 18650 Charger DELIVERED
  • Safety goggles DELIVERED

As for the pictures:

The Diode:

The Assembled Diode:

The Batteries and Charger (in case you cared):

Edit: Some beam pics
Beam into the night:

Beam from aperture, and my cats ^-^ needless to say, they were very curious.

If anyone sees anything wrong with the build, don't hesitate to let me know, after all, this is my first build.
Can't bloody wait for the host to come. >.<

Update: I finished the build!
Pics:

The two 18350's are coming in the mail, but even with one 18650 this bad boy still burns, as seen (somewhat) in the last image.
I like this thing

Hey all, question, with the 18650's that I'm using , when I attach one of those to the diode it shines visibly, but it's not quite at burning power. I can hold the battery to the diode for a good 30 seconds before it's even distinguishably warm. Is this a diode issue, or should I go buy new batteries? (these were cheapies on Amazon)
I have a 3 element glass lens screwed into the front, and I've focused it as best I can, but it still doesn't burn.

I would think its a driver issue unless the diode is basically a dud it looks bright enough, an m 140 is a legend diode and should easy burn, do you get a spot ...and even if close an m140 at least 1 watt will burn with so little effort is the lens in the right order you may have pulled it apart ...batteries easy to test multimeter measure 4.2 volts charged .something is really wrong ....

I'm not sure at this point what the issue is, the lens can focus it to a pretty small dot that I would assume should be burning, could it be the fact that the batteries I bought just suck enormously? I'll check their voltage/current when I get back from work. It sounds like the batteries would have to be 1/2 the current they normally are to get the preformance I'm getting right now..

True even if the batteries are only giving you only half the current capacity they should be the voltage is what will give the diode the power it needs even if the batteries only last 10 minutes before starting to go flat you should be able to burn during that time.

I'm going to take a lunch break and drive home, see if maybe now the batteries have charged overnight it will burn.

Took some multimeter tests on the battery, reported 4.2v as expected, I'm starting to think the driver/diode might be faulty. Here's some pics:

Notice the white stuff along the side of one of the board components..could that mean its heat damaged?

Update: Contacted DTR, realized to my stupidity that it requires two 18650's in series, rather than one ._.
Will post updates after I get that fixed!

Yea and if you are using a Skyray host you will want two 18350's not two 18650's. Suggest these but there are cheaper options as well.
AW IMR 18350 700mAh LiMN Rechargeable Lithium Battery

You can save the 18650's for another build.

My diode is officially burning things. Yay! I think I'll go with the 18350's. I'll just save the s4 for a bigger, badder diode.
Thanks for the help, DTR!

Nice build

It reminds me the sky-ray I built a long ago :

http://laserpointerforums.com/f39/sold-2-2w-445nm-blue-laser-sky-ray-sr5-78256.html

I really suggest that you will align the module with the sink. It will have a better contact with the heatsink and the heat transfer will be better.

Default Re: Build: 445nm 1.7W Skyray

Did it get hot while you were using it ? if not then that is probably just left over residue from cleaning the board after the soldering was done ?

It was probably immersed in alcohol to remove the solder flux and then drip dried, this will leave a slight film like the white stuff you are seeing
