Question Which Blue laser should I buy?

Hello everybody.

I am new here, although I have used the forum many times for reading advice. I am from Europe.
I am looking for a deep blue laser. Not violet/purple (405 nm) and not greenish.
I came down to 445/450 nm and 473/5 nm. Both seem to have the color I want. From picture 445 seems the color I seek (deep blue, no violet or green haze).

Now the thing is safety and price.

I want the laser for 3 main purposes:
1 - seeing the blue beam at a clear night (without need for fog or rain)
2 - astronomy pointing
3 - doing class-room presentations for a nice effect

Now doing 2 and 3, using protective glasses makes no sense, as then the laser is too strong for those activities: class-room as obvious, star-gazing due to high intensity lights ruining your observation.

I do know green lasers are brighter but I always wanted and love the blue colour.

I found this one: mini B - 445nm 100mW Pocket Low Power Single Mode Blue Laser Pointer
Price range I wanted around 30-70 USD (25-65€)

I hope you guys can help me in my quest.

Oh, I forgot... a laser in which I could regulate intensity from 5 to 100 mW or something would be very suited of course.

I await your replies. Thank you.

445/450nm is a deep blue color, and 473nm is almost turquoise.
I personally think 50mW's of blue in a classroom will be too much, even on non-reflective surfaces I will tell you it's not comfortable to look at.

LaserBTB's HL 450nm (bottom of list, 100mW) has a pot above the ON indicator, you can use that to vary power but note it will void warranty. Using protective goggles with a 100mW laser in a closed room is necessary in my book.

Either that or ask someone to build you a multiple-mode driver where you can say one click for 5mW, two for 50 and three for 100. It's doable, though I can't think of anybody off the top of my head who will do it.

Default Re: Which Blue laser should I buy?

idt a blue laser would have the greatest beam in a lit classroom. i have a 1w 445nm and even with a full battery, there are still some lighting situations when its not fully visible. probably 85 percent of the time it is though. Also, not so long ago there was a thread a student at a university posted where his teacher had a (supposedly) 5mw 532nm laser he used for presentations. The mere reflection from the laser was bothersome (to him, and probably some other students as well)
According to The Relative Laser Beam Brightness Calculator, a 100mw 445nm beam would be somewhat close to a 7mw 532. This MIGHT be ok for stargazing, however there are MUCH better alternatives. For that, your better off taking a gamble for a few overspec greens on ebay.

What is your budget? I might be able to link you to a better/higher powered one, but ONLY if you promise to get safety goggles and NOT use it for presentations. Accidents DO happen, no matter how careful you are.

Default Re: Which Blue laser should I buy?

First of all, thank you for your replies.

Indeed, I also came to the conclusion that using the Relative Laser Beam Brightness Calculator, a 100mw 445nm beam would close to a 7mw 532. Hence why I tough it would be safe.
I do want a blue laser, I know green would make it easier but not prettier for me (I know it's not a rational point here)

On ebay I find some 445nm 5mW lasers for 20 USD, which seems very cheap. I mean, are they truly 445 or 405? From the pictures they look purple. And will I see a beam with just that power on the blue laser?

As I stated above 25-65€ would be my budget.
A laser I could regulate intensity would be very promising, as I could put 5, 20, 100 mW according to needs.

As for safety goggles I don't want to have to need to use them if you get my point. Of course it I can toggle power, at higher power I would have to use them. But in class or astronomy gazing, it would be a bad sign if I had to use goggles...

Careful with the double posting...

Here you go: Anyone pushed a M140 beyond 2.0A?

Your budget may be a little low however...An M140 diode alone will cost you $45...

If you want the cheap method, just get an ebay green pen pointer it will be between 15 - 30 mW, very visible and probably a lot safer than a high powered 445 with mode options.

As I said, I just want a blue one, not green.
I am am not tech savy enough to build a laser myself. So I would have to stick to already assembled ones.

What about the one on ebay? (I left the link above?)
I also found this meanwhile, but the site looks dodgy: 50mW 445nm Open-back blue Laser Pointer (2 x CR2 Batteries) 50 mW 445 nm

You have posted 2 posts in a row, twice. That is a double "double posting"...

Double posting is posting 2 posts in a row, and you should avoid it.

So, you can compare power on the pic 1 - this on the left, middle ~100mW 405nm, right 473nm ~20mW.

Anyway, i found and ordered another from here (still on the road) and i guess it will be same or very close like this one but without box.
