Default Beam Visibility - 100mw 445

Hello to all,

I have really enjoyed browsing the LPF forums for the last few months and have been learning as much as I can but I finally decided to join and step out of the dark and into the light!

I am thinking of making the leap from the Amazon.ca selection of mediocre 532 405 and 650 "NewWish" style pens and get introduced to some more interesting colors.

It seems 1W 445nm is quite common but it appears that lesser mW in 445nm is quite rare actually nowdays. I was looking at the Lazerer 50mW and 100mW Mini 445nm units as a place to start and was wondering if anyone has given these a try. I am really curious as to the beam visibilty of 50/100mW of 445nm. Does anyone have any beamshots of this power in 445nm?

Would a beam of 100mW 445nm be less visible than a typical "NewWish 30mW 532nm?

Yes, it will be less visible, because 532nm(green)
is more than 4x more visible to our eyes.
Do you have safety goggles ?

Default Re: Beam Visibility - 100mw 445

The Mini B 100mW from lazerer.com uses a single mode 445nm diode. The beam and dot profile of this single mode diode is much cleaner.
Unlike the characteristics of a higher output multi-mode 445nm diode that would typically be used to yield an output surpasses 1 Watt.

A very well known member here at lpf, named rhd, created a Relative Laser Brightness Calculator. I love this thing!

Its very simple to use as you can choose the two wavelengths and compare how bright either the dots or beams between the selected wavelengths.
Here is the link! Click here --> Beam: (532nm 100mw) vs. (445nm 100mw) Try it out for yourself.
Once you see it you will probably know how to use it. If not don't be afraid to ask questions!
For future reference save the address in your bookmarks.

I don't know of any pictures directly comparing 100mW of 532nm VS 100mW 445. But I was able to find a picture that a member posted of the dot produced by "The Mini B 100mW" laser from lazerer.com

Hope I was able to help in some way or another

Good luck!!
- Raj

Single mode 450s are sweet. I'm definitely going to pick up a Lazerer Mini B when I can. Nothing wrong with my LaserLands equivalent, but pen hosts suck compared to tail clickies!

While it's interesting I wouldn't put too much stock in the relative brightness calculator.

It doesn't take into account beam diameter, or divergence, and it's simply incapable of taking into account individual variations in color perception.

Personally I found ~120mW of 445nm from an a140 diode to look about as bright as ~20mW of green.

Default Re: Beam Visibility - 100mw 445

Thank you all so much for your responses!

Raj that is some very helpful info, I had seen but forgotten about the brightness calculator. So it seems according to the calculator that 100mW 445/450 is somewhere between a 100mW and 200mW red which is a good reference for me since I have 650nm in both these mW.

I put in 1W 445 into the calculator and it said that this is only 69% as bright as a 100mW green... wow! Any thoughts on this? Is this actually true? That is good to keep in mind Infinitus about the individual perception of colors... I wonder is this up to variation with all the colors or just those on the tail ends of the visible spectrum?

N2Stuff, I checked out your review on the mini 100mW blue thanks for the link. I am amazed you can see the beam indoors! If you have time, what is your personal comparison of the beam on this compared to something in 532nm?

Part of my thinking for getting a lesser mW of blue is that I primarily want it for beam viewing and won't be using it for burning or indoors as I am a bit of the hyochondriac type and would like to avoid macular degeneration (blue light hazard) which my Grandmother suffered from. But I just don't know if I could go without a 445nm in my collection. (I am also the OCD hoarding type hehe - I have to have all the colors in the rainbow or I'd be distracted all day thinking about what I'm missing!

P.S.
Jim, I am looking for some good safety glasses that would best fit over my big black rimmed glasses. It seems a lot of people find D.L. goggles to be well made anyone wear them over other glasses?

445nm scatters well in fog. My 50MW olike had just as bright of a beam as my 70mw 532nm the last time I took them out on a foggy night. Again beam visibility depends on how foggy and dusty the air is. In a clean room you may have trouble seeing a 500mw.
