Default It anything wrong with my diode and driver?

Hi, today I tested my diode without the lenses, but my diode don't have nice beam, have anything wrong with my diode??

Photo 1

Photo 2

And my Boost Drive I put the multimeter to measure the voltage that my drive has producing and the voltage was 13V, this is a problem?

No, that looks completely normal for an uncollimated diode. You're going to have to put a lens on that to get a beam.

All diodes need a collimation lens. That is what it looks like without any lens.

Peace,

if you are running at 13 volts, you might want to not use it until you figure out why its running so high. Might want to post a pic of how the microboost is connected.

you running off a 12V power supply? sounds about nominal for a normal car alternator, 13.5 or so but not a lab style power supply . . .

he had a post earlier questioning the wiring of a micro boost drive. If he is measuring the voltage with a dmm with no diode or load connected, I think he can damage the driver. If he has a diode connected, 13v will definately lead to an early diode death.

Could that be 13V supplied to the multimeter alone as a load?

The driver output voltage should be measured across the diode, with the diode in place.

Ok, I will show what I did:

And here is the video of my laser diode without lens, i'm waiting my aixiz module and C3 flashlight because the mail service in Brazil is too low!

YouTube - 1W 445nm without the lenses

If I did anything wrong please tell for me, i'm trying to learn.

Thanks

The microboost is a boost driver. It boosts the voltage up to what the load needs. Hooking your DMM up that way, the driver boosted the voltage up to what it could to try to satisfy the need of the DMM. The voltage will be whatever the diode needs. The driver will NOT be pumping 13V into the diode.

Peace,
dave

What daguin said. Not to mention, no load will harm the driver.
You need a dummy load. Just use forum search and you can see how to build one.

"anything wrong" ?? ..... EEEEEK! ..... assassin ! .....

Do you realize that you are powering the module without load (so it go to 13V output, charging the caps at the output to this voltage), and THEN connecting the diode to the output of the driver, in this way ? (not speaking about using it without any heatsinking .....)

You are just so luck that the LD was not instantly turned into a led ..... or just smoked out

ALWAYS connect FIRST the laser diode to the driver, UNPOWERED, and THEN connect the driver to the battery ..... and NEVER disconnect the laser diode with the batteries connected to the driver ..... and also, use that LD in a heatsink, cause without it, it can become very hot in seconds, and burn.

IF the LD is still lasing, then you're extremely lucky ..... but don't push that luck too hard .....
