The amazing M-140 445nm diode?

I thought I would post to see if anybody else has noticed a large improvement in efficiency in the M-140 diodes over th A-140's?

I generally anticipate a power loss of 15-20% between the current setting of the driver and power output of the diode, but with these M-140's I just haven't been seeing much of a loss, if any at all. And, in a couple of builds they actaully LPM higher than the current running through them.

Here's several examples of the results I've been getting:

1. Using one of RHD's Mosquito drivers set at 1.72A and powered by 2 18350 cells, I am getting an output of 1.65W with a glass Aixiz lense and 2040mA with a G2 lense.

2 and 3. Using a flexdrive set at 1,150mA and powered by a 16340 cell produces 1.25W, and another using the same driver and current setting peaked at 1315mW on an AW ICR 10440 cell.

4. Using a Mohgasm 1.62A driver and powered by 2 18350 cells outputs 1.54W.

Is anybody else achieving similar efficiencies in their builds, or did I just happen to get several fluke diodes in a row?

And, has anybody tried pushing these beyond 2A, to see if maybe they have any higher capability than the A-140's?
 





I have received a lot of very positive feedback on these diodes since I started stocking the M140's. I have also noted this dramatic increase with some of the units I have been building. I built this unit the other night set to 1780mA with a G-2 lens and it peaked just barley over 2.4W.:eg:

Damn that's sick. Long lived that diode! LOL
 
I will get it out to you but I certainly am not going to guarantee it will hit 2.5W.:na:
 
I remember reading discussion that there were certain under powered diodes in the A140 bricks.

If so, I wonder is C.... is now stocking the bricks with only 'better quality' diodes. I find it hard to see that a manufacture was supplying different output diodes and these were places in a certain way on the brick....but perhaps so.

My thought than is, what is creating a better output in these diodes?
Better manufacturing of the diodes themselves?
Improvement in design?...perhaps they just got better at making them more efficient.

It would be interesting to see if there are any physical differences within these new diodes compared to the old ones.(not sure what they would be or if they would exist though)

When the cash is flowing again i'll have to pick one up from your store DTR:beer:

I highly doubt there are any basic design changes but it is quite likely that they are tweaking the chip growing technique and making improvements as they go. No different than what we see in the LED world. I'm also sure they bin these for output and Calapsio may just be paying more for the higher bins so they can up the output without redesigning the setup.

With that diode you can easilly hit more than 2.6W.
If you hit 3W with it, that would be EPIC

im confused since when can you hit 2.6W easily and if it is at 1780ma with a g-1 is hitting 2.3W what makes it easy to hit 2.6?

I think he's saying that if he bumps the current up over 2A he will hit 2.6W easily?
