CAUTION:
It needs to be said up front that this is not a build that you should emulate. Beyond typical warnings such as the need for eye protection, this build demanded extra caution, thought, and consideration of safety concerns, both during construction, and during use. You should not try this at home.

THE VIDEO:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3E10b_PgXdE&hd=1

DETAILS:
Because of the caution above, I am going to be rather light on some of the specific technical details.

The true peak power measured on my Ophir is 1.6 to 1.7W, and when I say "peak", I'll emphasize that this peak does not last long. As you can imagine, to be flyable on a tiny helicopter, I had to cut every corner possible, and the first obvious corner to cut was the heatsink.

When I say that it has never been this difficult for a 2W laser to pop a balloon, I mean it. What you're not seeing, are the 3 minutes of repeating failed attempts prior to this video, that I cropped out :)

Cooool !

If it was focused better, it would pop the balloon in a centisecond though.

It actually is focused quite well. It just looks like it isn't because the camera on my phone bleeding the dot out, but the diode really is focused.

It is tough to pop because it moves too much. As soon as the movement stops, it will pop a balloon instantly, like a typical 445 of its power.

Great job there!

I've thought about putting one on a quadcopter like the v929. It can handle far more weight and is a tad more stable. If I had an FPV system I'd probably go for it..

Nice video!

What setup are you using to remotely trigger the laser?

Running it into the balloon would have done the job quicker. :p

It's triggered through a button on the stock controller.

Poor balloon never stood a chance!
Now you can hire out as a ballon cleanup specialist; after the parties, you can zap all the balloons off the ceiling! :D

Seriously though, great job.

Nice; I have one of these helicopters and have joked about attaching a laser to it. Nice to see (but not surprised) that someone has eventually done it.

Well done! That is an awesome looking project. May have to pick myself up a heli or something to mess around with.
