445nm lasers all use the same (or nearly same A130/A140) diode so you will see similar performance no matter if it's commercially made or DIY. The real differences is how hard you drive it and the diode efficiency.

Diy builders and commercial manufacturers only have control over the driver current. A driver putting out 1 amp will net you 650-1200mw depending on diode efficiency. No manufacture is going to throw away the under rated diodes. In my opinion WL should rate the Arctic as >700mw (not >1W), that would solve alot of complaints. Then if yours put out 900mw you have have an overspec unit and people would love it.

If you don't want to build your own 445nm get a Spartan from dragonlasers. You can read my review if you want more info about it. Atm DragonLasers is not selling it due to the massive influx of orders but they will start to sell it again in approx 2 weeks.

am just waiting for dl to get them back in then ill get one. your reviews really good and makes me want one now !!! lol.
ive got a arctic g1 and ive had no probs with it so far. it burns through a cd in sec's and has a nice beam to it.

Seems the Spartan has hijacked the Arctic thread... On that note, is it reasonable to assume the 400mW Spartan is running the same power as its big brother, only the losses from the beam correction optics are reducing the power to 400mW?

Still waiting on my Arctic... 47xxx... *sigh*

EDIT: Been reading a bit about the Spartan here... Seems there are no corrective optics, just aperture blocking from a long focal length lens, so the lower power is due to less light getting collimated. http://laserpointerforums.com/f42/400mw-spartan-b4-after-pot-mod-54793.html

My G1 IS focusable, it takes a standard AixiZ lens, and will run for more than an hour continuous. It can easily be set up for external/remote activation (G1 only). With a little epoxy and a 1/4 inch nut on one of it's flat surfaces, it can be mounted on a tripod screw. But it only cost me $230 (shipped). Now that Arctics are $300+, I would get a quality DIY kit from one of the forum members instead.
