A little birdie in a tree whispered to me one frosty morn. The creature delivered tales from a land far away of 445nm diodes (presumably Nichia and/or Osram) being delivered in 3.8mm and 9mm form factors. Said diodes may or may not hit the market en masse soon, too.
Of course, there were 445nm 9mm diodes floating around before Crapio hit us up with the 5.6mm diodes. Apparently the Nichia ones are also rated for 1W or so, so there shouldn't be too much of a change.
I don't care so much about the 3.8mm diodes as they're just about useless.
The 9mm package, however, is larger, easier to work with, and also potentially gives more contact area for heatsinking. Collimation should be the same as the die itself would presumably be unchanged.
I don't know, though. It's just a rumour. If these diodes do exist, fun could be had with them. Diodes in a proper package (alongside the existing 5.6mm) diodes could be interesting.
