445nm vs Orion HV Series 635nm divergence?

Hi,

I'm about to get an Orion HV Series 635nm from laserglow, but I saw a review from it saying that its has a bad divergence. On laserglow site they say <5mrad, that is pretty bad. But I just love the color and it is very bright!

What's the divergence of a good 445nm?

Thanks!

Regina,

I got your PM about the Orion HV and will try to get some more beamshots.. (I've got a lot of beamshots on the 'to-do' list including some updates.)

I will say that the divergence on the Orion HV is a lot worse than the 445s. The 445s focus to a thin line, and the fast axis (length of the line) will diverge pretty badly, maybe equal to the Orion HV, but the line will stay pretty thin.

On the other hand, the Orion HV seems to have the same characteristics but on both axes: in other words, you get a square beam that diverges rather quickly in both directions.

That said I have learned to really like the laser; it's the brightest red I've ever seen - but do be warned the beam is a lot more divergent than the 445s.

Hi, thank you for the answer. :)

Well, if possible take some beam pics of the 635nm, I'm really interested in this one. Looking to your collection how this 635 compares to your 650 212mw in terms of brightness?

Thanks

There was a group buy on PL that flopped because the OP wouldnt continue it because he felt he needed to find the right optics to go along with it despite everyone's claims not to.

The group buy was for a 500-1000mw 638nm diode for 210 dollars. I wanted this diode so badly. It was similar to the divergence of the 445nm diodes.

Guess we'll have to wait for them to come in projectors like the blue counterparts... :(

But isn't it possible to use the laserglow beam expander with the Orion HV? That way you could get a really good divergence and you could focus it to a burning spot for better burning.

I'd say don't waste your money on a high power 635nm laser. I bought one for $700 and it is awful. I installed my into my projector only about 60% hits my scanner mirrors. Yes, the beam is that big! It basically looks light a flash light after 10m. I wouldn't even call it a laser.
I recently built up a 300mw 650nm 5.6mm open can laser. So, so much better:)
