Four plates two thin--two thick- I seperated them- the stock lenes fall out-put tape over the front to prevent anything getting in the windows and put the two thick parts back together w/ two screws

clipped away all the ribbon w/ help of mag. glass- took out the screws and gently pushed the diodes out with a toothpick--

Take care to not get compound on your work area and end up with it in or near the diode windows. It is between the two thick plates--wipe it off. Try to not push it down into the back of the doides.

Notice the small 'kidney' shaped holes--to small to allow removal w/o taking all of the ribbon from the pins.

Ah I see. That really helped... I'd give you rep but it won't let me.
I'll vacuum up any debris before I begin removing the diodes. Like you said ... don't want it to get on the diodes. Saving those pics.

Hey Jmgallego do you want me to remove yours?

Maybe 1 or 2 diodes.
Been trying to resist buying a bunch. Almost went for half an array. I would love to make a bunch of nice lasers for friends (set @ 250mA) but I don't want to risk any kids picking one up & getting hurt.
I only have one 445 diode at the moment since my glasses haven't come yet.

Been thinking of building a FDA type host. Delay, orange LED, key.

Yeah, I went for half of an array so I can cover most of the cost when I sell around 8 of them.

If I'm not mistaken it was a friend of your little sister Crazy Jay who said something along the lines of
"If it don't burn a hole in the wall then it's fine for my eyes." & topped it off with a cute little smile.
I recall of that line to reinforce why they must be locked up Always.
Only took one time being unlocked for Don't Laze Me Bro's sister to take two lasers to school.
When I do a 1W 445 I think its going to need an electronic button combo lock built into the host. Much better then a keylock IMO, since it can autolock after so many seconds of non-use.

Funny, I'm tempted to make a small 445nm instead. My current plan is to make an FDA type one, though I'm just in the planning stages so far. Where can I find the rules for a class IV laser (summarized)? Kind of a pain to sift through the laws (FDA).

Here's what I've drawn up so far, looks like the Dorcy 6-AAA flashlight I had already will be a good size as an 18650 host, including a keyswitch I found on Digikey: http://i47.tinypic.com/1t0w1y.jpg

On the laser itself, you need to have the five-point safety features:

- Keylock
- Safety interlock adapter (i.e. remote shutoff capability)
- Aperture shutter
- 3 second emission delay
- Power indicator (i.e. to indicate if the laser powered up)

That's on the laser itself. Most of the remaining "rules" with the lasers (all classes) have to do with ensuring a safe environment. With Class IV lasers in particular it is important to ensure that you don't cause any fires due to errant beams. That may also affect your aperture shutter as well (don't want that thing melting!)

You need a power indicator of a different wavelength than then laser so that you can see it through your goggles. At least that's what someone recently told me.

Looks like you will have a good bit of room for electronics. Hope to see lots of build pics. :D I tend to hack up mini padlocks for key cylinders.
I feel the aperture shutter can be skipped if there is a keylock & since I'm not actually going for FDA approval I won't bother with it.
An interlock adapter (remote shutoff) also doesn't seem needed on a pointer.

Hmm thanks for the tips. I don't think I can do all of those (namely remote shutoff and aperture shutter), but I still plan to make mine safer than a normal click-on laser pointer. Instead of a 3 second delay, would a low power-transitioning to full power sorta thing work just as well? Seems to me a full off to on in 3 seconds would be more misleading to someone handling it.

Yea personally the 3 second delay seems like just enough time for someone to point it into there eyes as they wonder why its not working. Its good for those who know there is a delay but for a handheld I feel 1 sec is better.
