Just going on what I've seen with my OWN eyes.

I guess I'll disregard the info that SCIENTISTS get paid to do this sort of thing for a living have to say about it. Thanks for your info, I've always hated scientists and technical data.

@Dave: Blue end of the spectrum, not necessarily blue in color.

Anyway, any glasses which block green and blue and have red/orange lenses will work fine for these. I'm saying orange/red lenses as I have glasses for RGB which may not work this low ( but certainly do work down to 473nm ) and have silver coloured lenses.

If you are worried about it - check the datasheet for your glasses or the glasses you wish to purchase to find out the wavelength range that they cover.

EDIT: Scientists are still only human. The same rules apply, paid scientist or no paid scientist. Anyway ... end of argument.

There is no reason to argue over this.. both of you are right.
The name of 420-450nm light is indigo, and indigo is a blue/violet. 445nm is closer to blue and therefore appears more blue than violet.

Most 473nm blocking goggles will also block 445nm, and several 405nm and/or 532nm blocking goggles will also cover this part of the spectrum. As long as people remember to check before they just put on their usual goggles there should be no problem.

Determining what name a particular hue belongs under(blue, violet, indigo) is very subjective since people all see things a little differently from person to person. To my eyes, 445nm is a deep royal blue.

I know that 445nm is far from the color of DPSS 473nm lasers, but this new powerful diode is such a milestone in the field of lasers, and it does bring a lot of excitement to the laser community like I haven't seen in a long time. Methinks this could spell doom for the ultra expensive and sensitive DPSS 473nm lasers!

And I just looked on the Photolexicon site... Is it true someone pushed one of these critters to 1W ith a TEC?

Yes. Last time I read, the 1W one had 45 minutes on it. I do not know if any more time has been added yet.

Sorry, I don't see anything. Is there supposed to be a picture? I thought these were 100mW CW diodes. Now I am hearing 500mW and 1W?

I know this is exciting but I think we should not assume too much about these diodes until they are in our hands and powered up.

^There are heaps of tests and data being gathered elsewhere as we speak. No one is making assumptions.. An example of these very diodes HAS been pushed to 1W and run there for at least 45 minutes straight. To my knowledge it is still alive.

There are pics in post 35, not sure why you can't see them.. They depict the LPM readout showing 1W of output and a pic of the test setup.

Oh my god... I'm so pumped about this! I'm gonna sell my BR modules and get one of these bad boys. How could you not be incredibly excited that we get a brand new wavelength at this ridiculous starting power at this price??? Jeez! These will run off a rckstr driver, right?

I see. I looked around a bit. The info is a little scattered.

I still can't see pictures. I'll play round with browser settings and see if that helps.

I read somewhere here that the Ith is around 200mA and Vf is ~5V.
You will need a lot of current to run this diode at full power and a big battery source. I would suggest a boost driver like DrLava's new "micro-boost".
