445nm diode case pin help...

The diodes that are sold on stonetek.org are case neutral, I was wondering if it would be a problem if I were to bridge the case pin to the neg pin of the diode(make it case negative) or if I should just make a lead wire off the case pin and splice it in with the negatie wire; or should I just leave it how it is because their diodes case pins are clipped shorter than the rest. I'm not sure how these diodes from this seller would handles with the spikes that can happen and destroy the diode though... If anyone can give me some advice it would make my purchasing decisions alot easier..

Thanks!!!

The case pin does not need to be used as long as your driver is getting it's positive and negative from the host. (usually via the pill)

Now, in some cases, you can use the case pin if you need to...

If you chose to do so, you just have to understand how the driver works. Depending on what driver you are using.

Take a close look at the diagram shown in this post:
http://laserpointerforums.com/f55/r...-taking-payments-now-48664-21.html#post781362

Certain builds are difficult to get a negative lead to the driver. Such as a Kryton barrel.

In a case like that, you can make use of the diode case pin. But it will also depend on what driver you are using, as to just how to wire it to the feed the driver... (can be use to feed positive as well - in a case positive situation)

(but with a red diode, the case pin is the negative)

If you just run the case pin back to the driver negative input it will work with any driver you want to use.;)

EDIT
Unless it is a case positive setup as Jay points out below.

It was an awesome day here in St. Louis. I have the doors and top off my Jeep and it was great .

Well, good for off road riding when it gets tacky...

Kansas Outcast,

This little tutorial shows good pictures of how I used the diode case pin to supply the positive to a driver:
http://laserpointerforums.com/f51/tutorial-blu-ray-laser-flashlight-combo-schweet-45385.html

The host is a case positive light. So in order to make the laser work, I used the case pin as the positive...

Just an example of the different situations that you may run into.

Some Flashlight drivers are designed for a case positive set up too... Such as the AMC7135 drivers...

Alrighty, so with the solarforce host that I ordered from you (depending on the driver I order) I may or may not have to case the case pin and put a lead onto the neg input, if it doesnt case any hard to the diode to do it when its not needed I may just do it as a precaution.

With the SolarForce, I put two leads on the contact board. So you can just get your positive and negative to the driver right from there... :)

Oh alright cool, thanks for the help Jay, and I'm very excited about getting the host. From all of the posts on the forum about it I hear the quality is amazing.
