I'll update this thread as the items arrive.

Driver: 17mm linear Mohgasm 1,35A
Diode: M-140 module kit with 3 element lens

*I'll add pictures as the build comes along also

Here's the total for the C6 build I'm making:

Host/Driver/Heatsink: $22.50
Module/Diode/Lens: $60
Laser Safety Glasses: $5
2 18350 batteries w/ charger: 6$
Heatshrink: 2$
Focus adapter: 0$ (harvested from old Lazerer that broke months ago)

So for a complete laser with glasses, batteries and a charger with focus adapter: $95.50

Here are pictures of the host and the soldered joints I made. I know it's not great, but it's my first attempt.


Ignites white matches instantly, hard way or not.
Burns at over 15 feet easily while focused to infinity.

Those are some damn good prices man... I'm currently doing a similar build, but I had to spend a lot more :yabbem:

Copper Heatsink - $41
Aurora SH-023 - $22
M-140 - $60
AW 18650 - $19
Benboost Mini v5 - $14
Arctic Silver Thermal Epoxy - $5

So in all I spent $161.00 and I still want to get a custom focus knob with a GITD ring installed... You'll have to let me in on where you get your batteries. I have only bought (1) RCR123 and (1) 18650 and have spent $35 bucks on the two, not including the shipping...

Got the charger back at lazerer a while ago for next to nothing, and the batteries are from Dealextreme

Well the prices you quoted for your bits and pieces are about right, just the heatsink and diode were over priced. If however you bought the diode with the module and lens then $60 is the usual price.;)

So that only leaves the heat sink...yes copper is more expensive but you should have searched around for copper SH032 heat sinks. They were being sold, even gold plated, for around $7 and could probably now be found second hand for $10...Where did you get yours?

Don't forget also you have a SS SH032 build and not a cheap C6...;) :beer:

Edit: Fasttech has some good prices on batteries and you could try AW on CPFmarket place, he sells AW's very cheaply.

Me too :) I am just sad because the heatshrink and batteries won't be here for a while ... ordered from DealExtreme! I was thinking I'd find some heatshrink at the store and just use my old 18650 in it until the new batteries arrive. I'll only get a fraction of it's full power, but it's something to ''quench my thirst''!

The diode was from DTR with the module and 3-element lens. The heatsink I ordered from Jayrob. I trust his work, but damn, $10? I coulda saved a chunk there...
 
Great stuff there, I think the thermal adhesive is missing.. It is the key ingredient if you want to use the linear drivers, and heatsink them very carefully, not only because the IC gets hot, not even the main concern since you're pumping just about 1.35A through it, but the smd components will heat up like crazy and smoke the hole build..

Pretty sure the pre installed driver is heatsinked and has a white adhesive on it. Which I guess is the thermal adhesive.
 
You should also use the thermal compound between the module and the heat sink to ensure there are are no air spaces. :beer:

Well if moh has heatsinked your driver you need not to worry about anything i said, but i hope it helps in your future projects.

From the buy list, i thought you purchased the components individually!

Oh sorry forgot to mention, I also like to add thermal grease to the outside of the heat sink to improve the thermal connection to the host. You can use epoxy but it would be a nightmare to remove if you ever had to. :beer:

I have a few questions about this part.... for the thermal epoxy I'm going to use to sink my benboost mini v5 to the pill, I purchased THIS

Now I dont know much about the driver itself, but I was told by Moh to heatsink the part of the driver that has a little copper bar on it. This thermal epoxy I'm using says it is for permanent jobs, not for use on things like CPUs.

Now I also see you guys also saying to use thermal paste on the module, where it meets with the heatsink. Seeing as how this thermal epoxy I bought has two syringes, I am assuming one is the actual thermally conductive paste, and the other is the resin that cures it. Would I be ok using the paste stuff or do I need to order a separate compound, like regular old CPU paste?

And in regards to using thermal paste on the pill where it meets the heatsink, is that really necessary? Or between the heatsink and host? I didnt think the fit would be tight enough between the heatsink and host to actually benefit from compound there, at least thats how it is with my greenie....
