Default 445nm - 10440 - Direct Drive Laser

I really like being off

Here is one that has been waiting for me to get the time to build it. It is a 445nm (A140) diode in a MagLight Solitaire AAA host. I picked up this host awhile back from Kenom. Ken had Jayrob machine down an AixiZ module to fit into the host. I set it up as a direct-drive 445nm with a 10440 battery. The 10440 is only 600mAh so I figure it will not harm the diode.

It is putting out 160mW with a fully charged battery. I do not know how long the battery will last yet.

Here it is along side a 10440 battery, my new Key Chain CR2 laser and a Kryton Groove

In my hand for better perspective of size

The obligatory beam shot (160mW)

Only my lecture pointer left to build and I will be done experimenting with the 445nm diode in hand-helds

Peace,
dave

Sorry. I didn't measure it. Maybe Jayrob has it in his records. Both the "head" of the module and the threaded portion had to be machined down. The "head" to fit into the host and the threaded section to allow for the body of the host to slide past it so it can screw up tight against the head

Peace,
dave

Yeah. Something else must have happened to yours. I cannot imagine one of these blowing at 420mA. I am not saying it didn't happen. I am just saying I cannot envision how it happened.

Schweet builds!!! I have a build using the same unit as your middle one in the first pic... saving that for a 6x at 175mA. I've have a SF diode I was going to use. I need
to have a cap threaded to recieve a Aixiz cap. Any idea on a thread pitch and size?

Based on reading the thread, I would think that it has already been tested to death. I think that you would be wasting your postage

I don't see why not. My 3.7V CR2 is 600mAh as well.

However, you have enough room in the CR2 KeyChain host for a flexdrive. I always use a driver if I can. You can use one in the CR2 Keychain

Peace,
dave

Nice build Dave !

Nice form factor for a blue pointer.

Now, you are in the 445nm direct drive club.

Some of the newest #18650 lithium-ion batteries are now designed for 4.35 VDC.

This allows for higher current with a direct drive.

Very cool! Such a tiny device. As long as the LD can't see voltage exceeding ~5.5 volts, it should work. And it's a rechargeable battery, so it's easy to pop the battery into the charger as necessary.

Most Li-Ion batteries should idle at about 4.3V fully charged anyway. Not sure why they rate them at 3.7V.

Dave, very compact build! Finally, a Solitaire that can be used for something other than hiding notes or matches

Please be careful not to go over the maximum discharge rate of that 10440. In fact, some of the china sites now have protected 10440's, you might look into those.

2*capacity is the usual discharge maximum. The usual capacity for a 10440 seems to be right around 350mAh, so ~0.7A would be your maximum safe continuous discharge rating.

I'm probably just being paranoid, but just thought I'd throw it out there.

Again, nice build. Points for most compact build I've seen. I like how the lens nut seems to fit just perfectly in the head of it.
