I know I am new to the forum, but I am not new to life. There are many members on here that are extremely good at what they do. This includes people that are fantastic with a lathe, a pro with drivers, or sell the best electronic equipment around. This does not mean that if someone comes out with a new product that you cant recreate, that its a lie. I would think the people in this field would be open minded. But, Most of the time, all I see is people with giant egos that can't think outside of the box. I don't know Rick, but I do know that he has something that works for him. Even looking at his videos he explains why his setup is a certain way. Just because you have been on this forum forever or you think you know everything, just take a step back and remember,

True enough. Perhaps in this case I was too quick to jump to conclusions. Most of what I said though was based on the fact that someone said he ran his diodes at 3.5A, he said that isn't true and he runs them at 2.5A, which is more realistic. Technology improves fast, but the probability of getting a harvestable 445nm diode in 2013 that can be run at 3.5A is near 0%. Many sellers from China and the USA come here claiming to sell "10,000MW BLUE LASER" and 99% of them don't turn out to be true. It makes people (especially me, since this is almost a daily event on LPF) extremely sceptical when someone claims to have a laser that's more powerful than the tech that's available to us.

...he still includes those "4000mAh" 18650's with his laser though, but there's no higher capacity 18650 available than the Panasonic 3400mAh ones. That part is still raises red flags.

...and this part raises red flags too
0mw no power this is a kit you have to put it all together

...and this
You are legally responsible for any injury to anybody resulting from the use of or assembly of these components or their finished products. You Accept this diode/module as a COMPONENT for integration in a system of YOUR OWN design and will be legally responsible from any and all LIABILITIES These Diodes and Modules are sold solely as a component for incorporation into the customer's end products. Therefore, this diode/module is exempt from compliance with the appropriate requirements of FDA 21CFR, section 1040.10 and 1040.11 for complete products.

I think that we've established that selling the lasers like that to circumvent FDA law doesn't work.

...and the fact that if these are 3W-3.5W lasers he should be including better eyewear than those cheap goggles on ebay. Pretty much all of the cheap goggles I've tested don't have a high enough OD to properly protect you from a 3.5W laser. If those ones do have a high enough OD then that's fine by me, but it's doubtful.

That all being said a diode running at 2.5A emitting 3.5W doesn't sound crazy.

His best bet would be to send this to a third party if he wants to get it verified, someone with a 5W Ophir. IE, Daguin, Hak, DTR, Lazerer ect.

This right here would be the best option.

I'm not willing to take one of this builds apart, because frankly I've had bad luck taking things apart. To take an LPM reading and video it, is easy enough though.

If there is a source for diodes that regularly hit 3.5W, it would be great to know, but really I wouldn't mind just being able to buy one or two of those diodes from him, and so he can make a profit.

I'm sure there are others that feel the same way.

@Moh, tell him to pick a vet, and send one of his lasers out?

I cannot believe the guy when he says 3.5A. RIGHT. What is he cooling it with liquid nitrogen? Even with liquid nitrogen I don't think the diode would survive more than a few seconds. On top of that he then claims 3.5W+ outputs from a single diode...

Basically, until someone highly reputable backs up his over the top claims I wouldn't believe anything he says no matter how nice he comes off in his transactions. That's just me though.

I would probably be more likely to believe the claims if he outright admitted to running the test while in far below standard ambient temperatures. I hope I am not the only one to see the condensation in the air from his breath at about 20 seconds.

2.5A, not 3.5A

I said this about the temps a while ago, also I noticed that he says that the lpm is good for 150w or something and if I'm not mistake those don't have a 1/1 output.

Oh well someone said 3.5A. Either way, failing to mention the small fact that you are testing in far below ambient temperatures is too large of an oversight to let me believe everything he says. It also leads me to believe that its not a stretch for him to stretch the truth in other areas. I don't know if the LPM could be capable of that high, I know Ophir heads are very powerful so I won't touch that but I wouldn't be surprised if his gain is painfully off. Even if he is trying to be truthful, it isn't truthful to leave out drastic test effecting details.

I think a good test would be for someone to send him a cheap laser that the output is known and tested and have him test both lasers in one shot on video. If anyone cares all that much that is XD.

If it were proven true, By a trusted member on LPF, I'd gladly purchase one of his kits.

I'll watch it when I get home, but if he's trying to prove his point... is going with Cyber Bullies for the title really the best approach?

Offer to LPM one of his lasers still stands, but only on the condition of dropping "Cyber Bullies" from the title.

 I want one of this super diodes.
Thanks Moh for your interest in help this guy. I am waiting for the official LPF memeber measure.

It really is a good try but it still doesn't mean his LPM is calibrated correctly. At least his ambient is normal and all the other parameters are fine. Zeroing out does not prove calibration.

Believe me, I would like to believe this is possible but even if it is it changes almost nothing mainly because freak diodes are insanely rare and that is what the lasers shown would be. Its not like he unlocked some super new method of running a 9mm he just got lucky. I also wouldn't want to see the life on those diodes at that current.

An external reputable source testing the lasers would pretty much be the only thing that would convince me. Not that I am important enough(or conceited enough to think I am) to have to convince so I know it doesn't matter and basically if it is true then good for him and if not oh well.

EDIT: He should look into including legitimate batteries with his lasers. 4Ah 18650 cells... right.

As a side thought, if his workmanship is good the whole thing is not a bad deal even if it isn't on spec.

I wouldn't even mind reduced lifetime of the diode so much. I mean on average I'd say my lasers get maybe half hour of use per month.

I only ever had three LED on me, and one go zombie. The zombie had at least a few hours of run time on it.

I'm not so sure id want a $90 diode to die quick on me...

Well, define quick? I mean for a projector, sure it would be unacceptable, but for a handheld, if instead of 10,000 hours I was looking at say 100 hours, that would likely be way more than I would need. I don't think any laser I own has more than a few hours run time on it.

For me it would be a worthwhile trade off, depending on the expected lifetime of the diode, to for example, push a 12x to 1W, knowing full well that I will get significantly reduced use out of it.

I would just like to point one thing out.

He is using a 150W rated LPM. A variance of 1-2W (especially in the very "low" range of <5W) would not be surprising to me, especially when you consider that this LPM is likely designed specifically with things like high power IR lasers in mind, not necessarily short-wavelength 445nm diode lasers.

I'm fairly nearby him; I'll get in touch.
