If the 50mw is a DJNY build...Go for it. You won't find that quality for the price anywhere else.

Since these diodes can be pushed insanely high in comparison to other diodes, people tend to build high powered lasers, rather than lower powered ones.

I ran one of My 445's off my power supply around 100ma once, and I could not see the beam in a dim room. I could see it in a dark room.

It started lasing around 100ma. I don't know why it started so low, but that's the current I hit when it fired up. Might have been up to 125ma as the readout is not exact at the low currents.

The 445nm diode start to lase at 200mA. I build one 445nm pen at bare minimum current.
The beam is already visible at daylight. For 100mW power I estimate 300mA current which is too much heat for a penhost.

I probably had a freak then. That was the only Diode that I ran at that low of a current. I usually start around 400ma and up. I don't know how much surface area for heat sinking a pen host has, so I'll defer to You on that.

I built a low power 445 for under 100 with a flex drive running between 30 and 20 mw. I used a pen host and it runs off 2 AAAs at about 210ma. I can see the dot quite brightly and the beam in a dark room I like it a lot.
