I have just acquired a pen as described in the title... anything more technical about its components and I don't know.

It has a focus ring on it and I was just wanting to know, when I twist the ring to focus (too much and it unscrews itself off), but when I twist to loosen it, it becomes slightly loose which slightly upsets the stableness of the laser beam unless I hold it in place, is this normal?

The LP looks just like this one: http://laserpointerforums.com/f51/s...embly-photo-tutorial-picture-heavy-58889.html except it doesn't have the spring coil or white tape around the focus ring... it just unscrews off... Actually, thinking about the purpose of that spring on the lens housing, I think that's why when I twist mine to focus, it's a bit loose, I imagine that spring keeps it in place steady, so could I get hold of one of this springs or is it a simple DIY thing?

Also how do I focus to infinity?

Thanks

Try adding some teflon tape to the threads, but make sure it cant get in the beam at either end of the lens barrel.

So do without the spring and just find some teflon tape to wrap around the lens mount thread and then screw it back in?

There are a few different springs out there, some of which work very well & others that are near useless. Is the spring you're using go inside the module (cup holding the diode) underneath the lens as you screw it down or does it go around the outside of the focus lens like this one? If it's an internal module spring (smaller one) these generally aren't very effective with keeping your lens from being loose as you describe.

I would suggest trying a few different springs before using teflon tape. While teflon will definitely work, you have to be very careful with applying it & not getting it anywhere near the optics on the lens or the diode as grainde had mentioned. If a few different springs dont cut it for you & fix the problem, the teflon most certainly will :D

EDIT: just re-read your post & realized you're not using a spring at all(?) Definitely try a spring before teflon tape, I suggest this because the spring may fix your problem without any threat to your lens/diode setup and you can add & remove the spring at will

At present, when I twist the focus ring too much, it comes out (unscrews) and there's no spring in place so I would assume it is the External Lens Spring as you have linked to:

External Lens Spring

I will for the time wrap some teflon (which I'm sure is what I call electrical tape) and order that one in the link. It'll take a while to arrive here in the UK which is why I'll use the tape for the time being :)

No electrical tape is different! Teflon tape is used on waterpipe threading to stop leaks and is very very thin and white....

Teflon isn't electrical tape. It is used by the plumber to seal off water tubes. They add Teflon tape to the threads on the tubes and screw it on other parts.

First screw the focus ring back on the barrel and make it very tight. Then buy these internal springs, http://laserpointerforums.com/f39/feeler-internal-lens-springs-77484.html
They are very soft and fits the module perfectly.

^^^ I need to type faster :)

I have a Survival Laser S4 host and I use one of the external lens springs off that site combined with an internal lens spring I got off of cajunlasers. Here are a couple pics of the springs I just took:

In the second picture the lens on the left is the internal from cajunlasers and the one on the lens itself is from survival laser. The combination of these two gives me an extremely snug and smooth focus through the whole range of focusing. Here is a link to the internal springs from cajunlasers:

What's the difference between the external and internal springs? I.e. where do they both go? One of them go around the lens mount thread I know that much

The internal spring goes inside the module like this picture.

Let me see if this is right:

The internal spring goes inside the hole between the focus ring and lens mount thread, and the external spring goes around the lens mount thread?

The internal spring goes in the hole with the lens threads and the external spring goes around lens itself. The internal spring is pressed on by the bottom of the lens inside the threaded hole and the external pushes out on the focus ring. Both springs push out making a nice balance of resistance.

Aha, thank you!

I'm gonna get an assorted spring set from the local hardware store and hope that at least one of them will work well in terms of size for the internal and external spring

Be careful you select an internal spring that is smaller than the lens barrel but large enough so it wont hit the diode. Also, I suggest that once you select the springs you want that you run some sand paper over the ends so that you smooth out the sharp parts to let them slide smoother.
