I've already addressed your questions via PM, but just for the sake of the discussion... if the chip is getting hot and there's no output, the LD and GD pad (+ and - output terminals) are probably shorted, check to see where you soldered the diode to the driver for any solder bridges. I test each driver before I send them out, so they should all work fine unless something gets damaged on the way or during installation, which in that case, let me know and we'll get it figured out.

But, on the other part, 2xAAs gives you 3.0V input, which as I've said, these require at least 2.25V over the output voltage (for reds is ~2.7-3.0V), so the minimum input voltage should be over 5.25V input for a red diode. There should still be output at 3.0V input, but it will be much less than expected.

yea, wow, I hooked them both up this weekend (one bluray one 16X DVD). No blown diodes! They both work great!

Hooked this one up to a BR and fit it into an Aixiz module at that. Excellent. Only thing is you need a smaller solder iron as if your tip is too big it is not possible to solder the diode to the contact points without melting the chip close to it. So perhaps the chip could be shifted away slightly. Or attach leads made out from the contact points if really necessary

Yes, I do recommend you have a fine tipped soldering iron, space is tight on the board.  The standard 25W iron conical tips may be difficult to use,   You can solder wires between the board and laser diode, but it may not fit right in the Aixiz module, also be careful no to let anything touch the case as it may create a short.

This is an inexpensive iron that I believe will work well:

I sharpened the tip of my old soldering iron with a file. it worked great.

So has anyone ran a blu-ray with these on 7v yet? or maybe 7.2? How did it turn out? I have my two 38mA drivers here but I haven't had a chance to play with them yet

they work great, i have to blurays hooked up to his drivers and still works fine :)

Just to make certain of one thing before I screw up, I'm 95% certain I'm right but I just want to make sure:

Looking at the spec sheet you sent, specifically "Figure 13. Current Regulator". Is this the setup for how the driver is working? I'm just making certain that if there is continuity directly between the diode case/ground/aixiz housing and the negative side of the batteries in my host, this is alright just as it is with the LM317 chip. Aka, is the neg/ground wire coming off of the back of the driver at the same ground as the diode casing.

Like I said, I'm almost certain that this is the case. I just seem to have read something about DX drivers or some other LDO circuits that required the diode neg to go back through the driver and not short between the diode neg and battery neg.

Yup its the same ground, I was able to cut off the negitive wire when i put the driver in my kenom barrel. Just make sure the ground of the diode is touching the ground on the driver and your OK.

Yes, as pwnstar said, the output and input negative are the same; the output ground is not isolated from the battery negative.  You can connect ground through the case with no connection to the board as long as the laser diode ground is connected to the board.

just to make sure, I dont need to isolate the didoe from the metal host right?
