Re: Lava Micro FlexDrive Driver (lavadrive2) fits

Doctor, I have just ordered a flexdrive & it appears from Google checkout that you are out of stock right now. If I did it right, I am hoping you will eventually have these back in stock and will send me a driver that will power a blu-ray diode that I will be harvesting from one of the HD-DVD drives off the geeks.com site. Hopefully, it will be one of the PHR-803T sleds. Thanks in advance,

JeffP

Re: Lava Micro FlexDrive Driver (lavadrive2) fits

DrLava, IgorT, folks... I was thinking about the possible failure modes that might fry my brand new PHR-803T based LD and a thought that might have merit bubbled to the surface. If any of the rest of you in this group are as scattered and interruptible as me, you might be able to relate.

I can foresee a situation where I am ready to start setting up my driver and install the test load of 4 series wires silicon diodes backwards. Wouldn't that be as dangerous to a lavadrive as an open? And what if I just build my test load with two sets of dummy loads wired parallel inverse to each other? Wouldn't that always prevent such a failure mode? Or am I just twitching and no one messes up in this particular way? And who is tired of all the darned question marks in a row?

Re: Lava Micro FlexDrive Driver (lavadrive2) fits

You are correct.. Installing the dummy load of diodes in reverse would be as bad as an open circuit for the driver.

But if you are careful, that won't happen. The diodes have a marking - a white circle around it. It is closer to one side. The side with the white ring should be pointing at the ground connection of the LavaDrive (away from the positive potential.

I completely forgot about this danger in the instructions. There should be a warning about this as well. Good thing you caught it.

So, just to be sure - is there a step-by-step out there somewhere (or supplied with driver) that explains the process of setting this up for my PHR-803T without destroying diode or driver. I almost had some confidence until I read Jeff P's post

(This is what happens when Mechanical Engineers wander into the Electrical Engineer's playground. Kind of like when a EE comes to me needing a mechanism designed. Electrical is not my forte. I am not too proud to ask for help... this is how we learn.

Thanks for a great forum.

Re: Lava Micro FlexDrive Driver (lavadrive2) fits

I ordered a couple of drivers, and I made an assumption - the lower power drivers are the BR drivers, correct?

Hope so! :crosses fingers:

Obserervation and suggestion - I wanted to add a high power driver for a red diode that I have, but the way the order page is set up, I could only choose one OR the other, but not a combination of 1 high power, and 2 low power drivers... Had that combo been available, you could have sold me an additional driver.

Your Assumption was correct :) you most likely will not want to exceed 100ma with the PHR-803T diode...you CAN - but shortened lifespan of the diode WILL happen.

V1.15, either current range will work for red or blue diodes, but the lower current range is more suitable right now to the blue diodes that are available. There are instructions on setup included with the driver. If you need more help, feel free to post!

Thanks for your reccommendation, I'll add the possibility to buy both types with one click soon..

Sweet! Looking forward to getting these. I see that I already got a shipping confirmation email from you - man, so far I am impressed and I have not even got an envelope in the mail!

Re: Lava Micro FlexDrive Driver (lavadrive2) fits

Sorry if this has been covered already, but I don't feel like reading the whole thread right now...

What parts differ between the two current ranges?

I'd like to buy one of these for a 803t build I'm looking to make, though at some point in the future I may want to use this to drive an open can red.. is it feasible for me to swap a single part or something to get a different current range?

Thanks!

Only the pot. It's 5k for the high range and 30k for the low range. I'd prefer it if you bought the red range and modded it to low if necessary, I had 50/50 and the low range is much more popular, so supplies are more limited.

Re: Lava Micro FlexDrive Driver (lavadrive2) fits

Got my driver today looks great, only thing is that it is bigger than 12x12 I might not be able to use it :( designed my laser so everything would drop in from the front where the lens is so if I enlarge that to make the lavadrive fit my lens will be loose I was planning to sand down the sides that don't have the contacts down to 11.7mm but there is a trace in the way. the actual measurement of the board is 12.35., maybe I can flip the board around and try to connect it somehow anyway.

Hi, sorry about that I think the manufacturer wasn't extremely precise when they cut them out. 12mm verses 12.35mm... Hopefully you can trim it to fit nicely :)

Yes they will be sold over the summer.

Not a problem I trimmed it down as far as I could, there is a trace in the way and it still wouldn't fit, so I just needed to change my design, all is well :) Still can't try it out though no LD yet.
