The max the high range can possibly go is about 650mA, you can put two drivers in parallel for more current.

Im sure this has been asked, but I couldn't find the answer... I'm using the older high range model.

How critical is the test load? Can I set my red laser diode current w/ a white luxeon led (which probably pulls about 5 volts)? I know the white luxeon would be more suited for a blu-ray diode, because of the voltage, but does it even matter?


Then I've got one observation... This thing acts crazy if it hasn't got enough juice. I was trying to set the current w/ the luxeon, to about 420ma. W/ a single new cr123 I was having some crazy results. It would vary between 100ma and 300ma, then at the end of the range of the pot, start to drop again. By vary, I mean w/out touching anything other than applying and removing power, on each power up it would give me a totally different reading. I gave up on that and put in a 17670 battery, and it finally started to behave.

Yes the test load does matter somewhat, as you have found. at 420mA the older driver is running at the max of its capabilities when boosting 3V to 5V. When not boosting, (3V to 3V or 4V to 3V) it has a much easier time at that high current, no issues. Also the battery under load is probably dropping to 2.8V, making things worse. If possible, use a few 1n400x diodes to give a test load voltage close to your final laser diode voltage, or use a rechargeable CR123a battery which has a higher Voltage.

i had to wait a few weeks to get the 6 i ordered from dr lava but was surprised when i got them b/c he threw in 2 extra drivers with the 6 i ordered. he is a great man this dr lava.... ;D

Dr.Lava, I hooked up my Lavadrive today and the results were very strange. I hooked the driver up to a red diode to test it, and put a digital multimeter in series with the circuit, but only .48 mA were going through. That's when I accidentally moved the driver and it powered up to 105mA. I realized that I put the battery to the negative end instead of the positive end, but the diode was still hooked up to the positive end. Is there a mistake on the driver, or am I doing something wrong? A detailed diagram is shown below:

i used rkcstars test load to test mine with no problems.its only 5$ and saves the hassle of wondering what you did wrong. im not sure if you can test these the same as the ddl circuit(resistor for test load) and i didnt read the instructions on how to test these so...

Yeah Jimmy that's way wrong.. you might damage the driver hooking it up like that. you have to connect the battery - to the driver too! Also, don't put your multimeter in series to measure current, use a 1 ohm shunt and measure the voltage across that.

You are hooking it up wrong. It hooks up like this:

By the way, use Rckstrs test load to measure current. Measure mV across the 0.1 ohm resistor, the formula is: 1mV=1mA

Ohh. I read somewhere (I don't know where) that you don't have to hook up the negative to the driver if you connect it to the diode.. So is the following good for the PHR diode?

you dont need to use the "case" pin

with the 803t diode i always cut off the case pin which is the photo diode.

the wires that go from the diode should go to the diode side of the driver and thats it then the battery side just goes to the batteries + and -
