Cool FS: Pocket Mini Build Kit! - Easy Assembly!

Also, check out my new Stainless Steel CR2 build kit! Polished!

http://laserpointerforums.com/f64/fs-stainless-steel-cr2-kit-polished-schweet-50879.html

Price drop for the black Pocket Mini with GITD tail cap... Now $40 for the basic kit. (host/heatsink/drill the pill)

Note: I do not sell complete lasers. My kits do not include laser diodes or laser modules. You must buy your own laser diode and/or green laser module to complete the assembly. (Most kits have a 'Hot' option for the driver installed and current set, which is most of the work)

Lots of options with this kit, so read this first post thoroughly...

The Pocket Mini is an excellent host for a 445, blu-ray, or a red build!

With my Pocket Mini 'Hot' option, most of the work is done. (Driver installed, and current pre-set)

The normal kit heatsink is made from 6061 aluminum. I am offering a copper heatsink option for the Pocket Mini Kit!

Copper heatsinks are available for only four of my kits. The Pocket Mini, and the 18650 kit, my new Stainless Steel CR2 kit, and the Star Trek Phaser kit. My mini lathe doesn't like copper. But these heatsinks are a straight forward design, and I don't mind making them in copper.

I will charge $8 dollars extra for the Pocket Mini 'copper heatsink upgrade' version of the kit. ($27 dollars plus $3 dollars shipping for the Pocket Mini copper heatsink only)

Using a FlexDrive, you will have the option of using a 3.0 volt Lithium primary (CR123), or a 3.6 volt rechargeable. (RCR123) Note: The UltraFire RCR123's fit a little snug, but the AW batteries are a very nice fit!

This 'Pocket Mini Kit', is a great build for DIY... You can use these pictures and first post, as a tutorial for the build...

My latest supply of these have a GITD tail cap! (1/18/2010) See 'New Style Pocket Mini' below for the slight difference in the assembly... (some of these have a spring on the board. Those are the ones that will have a slightly different heatsink design as shown. See details at the bottom of this first post)

Also available in Chrome!

The chrome ones are $48 dollars for the basic kit... (I had to pay extra to get them from another vendor) They are really nice!

HOT option - I can include a FlexDrive mounted with current set to your desire, and leads soldered on. (see below)

Tritium Marker option! - This option is to mount a Tritium vial inlayed into the host. This stuff glows on it's own! Not like a normal GITD product. (see below)

Awesome 405nm glass lens option! - This 405-G-1 glass lens mod fit for AixiZ will give you a 31% increase in power with your blu-ray vs AixiZ acrylic! See here:
FS: 405-G-1 Glass Lens Mod - 31% Increase vs AixiZ!

(Unless you get the FlexDrive 'Hot option', I'm not offering to do anything to the circuit. For the normal 'kit', I'm just selling the host, the heatsink, and drilling out the 'pill')

I use double sided tape to mount the driver. This not only holds it in place, but it isolates the driver contacts from the pill...

Here are some beam shot comparisons with 6X vs 8X. Both using my 405-G-1 glass lens modification...

(Beam shot comparisons with smoke)

SCHWEET!

I am selling the host, with heatsink, and also doing the modification on the 'pill' for an easy build. You will need a 1.5mm Allen wrench for the heatsink set screws.

* Heatsink - A set screw will be included. This is for your AixiZ module. (business end)
* Host
* Drill out the pill

I will include the extra parts in a baggie. (LED emitter, reflector, etc...)

All you will need is the driver, battery, module, and diode! And of course some basic building skills such as soldering, and understanding how to connect and test a FlexDrive or similar driver.

Here's the price breakdown and options:

* Pocket Mini basic kit - $40 plus shipping. This includes the host/Heatsink/and pill drilled out. (or $48 for the chrome Pocket Mini basic kit)

Then you can add these options if desired:

* Pocket Mini Copper Heatsink option - Add $8 dollars ($27 dollars plus $3 dollars shipping for the Pocket Mini copper heatsink only)
* 'Hot' option - $48 This option includes a FlexDrive or Micro BoostDrive pre-mounted with current set as desired, and lead wires soldered on. (more details below)
* AixiZ module - $5
* 405-G-1 glass lens mod - $55 31% increase for blu-ray vs AixiZ acrylic! (new) See link in signature!
* 650-G-1 glass lens mod for red! (fit for AixiZ) - $52 25% increase for red vs AixiZ acrylic! (new) Shown here: http://laserpointerforums.com/f64/fs...ase-46332.html
* EzFocus adapter - $20 (see below)
* Tritium Marker installed - $24.99 (more details below) This option is not available for the Pocket Mini Chrome. I don't want to machine into that nice chrome finish...
* Shipping - $6
* Please read my shipping policy here!

More about the 'HOT' option:

I can include a FlexDrive mounted into the pill with the brass ring glued in place and the driver set to your desired current with lead wires soldered on for you!

All you would need is your module/diode, and a battery. (and a 1.5mm Allen wrench for the set screw)

This option does not include the diode, module, stickers, or battery. But it will be really easy for you to complete the build. I have several good tips for assembly in this first post...

EzFocus Adapter!

I will be selling these as an option to get with my Pocket Mini Kits, or separately!

Note: Designed for use with my 405-G-1 glass lens modification for blu-ray, or my 650-G-1 glass lens mod for red.

You can set the module in the desired position. I will offer them knurled, as the pictures show.

These will be $20 dollars plus shipping...

Tritium Marker Upgrade!

There's this stuff called Tritium...

* Yes it is radioactive - Tritium - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
* No, it is not really harmful... As long as you don't ingest it.

This stuff GLOWS for over 10 years! Not like a normal glow in the dark item. It GLOWS on it's own! No light needed for this stuff to glow. (it just looks 'off white' in daylight - like a very tiny grain of rice, but smaller)

So the option is to have your host 'inlayed' with a Tritium marker!

Blue, green, or red... your choice.

Here are the pictures...

The glass vials are tiny... just under 1/16" in diameter, and about 1/5" long.

Note: The hosts are not all perfect, and the areas for machining the slot on the hosts vary in width. I will get the slot as straight as I can, and it will be very nice. But there are imperfections in the hosts when you look close. So please cut me a little slack in that area.

Then the Tritium marker will just be glued in with clear silicone.

Before you ask, Greg is my contact for the Tritium. I don't sell it by itself, just in this upgrade for the Pocket Mini Kit or the DIY Green Kit.

And I also want to mention that Greg is stocking my Pocket Mini Kits in his store, Stonetek.org. He is able to offer 'upgraded' kits that have more parts, including FlexDrives.

As seen above, I do offer a FlexDrive 'HOT option' as well.

The price for the 'Tritium Marker' upgrade, which includes the machine work and the Tritium vial set into the slot, is $24.99

If you already have one of my kits, you can send me the back 'barrel' portion of the host, and I can do the modification for the same price. Plus return shipping...

Build Tips!

You will find this to be an easy build with this 'kit'. But let me give you just a couple of build tips to make it even that much easier!

* You want to use a fine, very flexible wire for these small builds. The best wire that I have found is in a computer mouse cord. If you strip the outer insulation, you will find several strands of excellent wire that is very flexible and great for building lasers!

* A good way to 'trim' the dust caps (shown in the first picture), is to put it on the back of an AixiZ module. (after cutting the 'nub' out) Then, you can use a really sharp knife to cut around nice and straight!

* As you know, the brass ring will press into the bottom of the pill. Use a little Thermal adhesive here. Maybe just in three spots. (not all the way around, because this is your negative contact point) That way, when you finish the build and go to tighten the assembly into the head, you won't have the problem of the brass ring 'spinning' in the pill instead of everything getting tight.

* It's a good practice to test voltage just from the wire leads coming out of the pill, once you get the brass ring and board in place...

My method for this, is to use a 3.0 volt Primary (3.6 is too long for this test), and after filing a small part of the edge of the barrel clean, just touch the edge of the pill onto the clean edge of the barrel, with the battery positive making contact in the center of the board. (obviously the switch has to be on)

I use this same method to set current after my FlexDrive is installed into the pill...

* And my final build tip for you, is that you will find it easy to screw the assembly into the head, by putting a dust cap on your lens to protect it, and then you will 'pinch' the assembly between your thumb and ring finger. (or pinky finger) Then, using your other hand, twist the head on. When you get half way, you will switch ends with your thumb and ring finger so that your finger will be able to fit inside the head of the host. Finally, use a pair of needle nosed pliers to get it snug and tight once the heatsink touches the front. (you will see two little 'notches' on the brass ring, that you can use the tip of some needle nose pliers to fit for tightening)

New Style Pocket Mini: (some will have the spring on the board like these pictures show, others won't. The ones with the spring on the board, will have the slightly different heatsink design)

Basically the same assembly. The slight differences are shown in these three pictures... (copper heatsink upgrade is the same - $8 dollars)

$46?

That actually seams pretty good! Everything I need is there apart from driver and diode obviously?

Yes! I think that it is a pretty reasonable price. In fact, I promise you that you will not be disappointed! It is a superb build if do say so myself!

I am getting orders already, and will be stocking up and continuing to offer this 'Pocket Mini Kit'!

Not to mention you get a Cree Q5 led capable of 200 lumens if I recall correctly. There are a million and 3 projects that can be done with these lights. Modify an old flashlight to take the light and you'll be BLOWN AWAY with how bright it is!

It is a nice little emitter, I think you are right Ken. I believe it is a Q5... (or possibly a P4)

A good emitter to save, but that's not what your after here right?! This is a very nice host for a laser mod...
Jay

Edit: This emitter is bright! It will draw over 1 amp with a 3.6 volt battery. But I notice much less with a primary 3 volt battery.

Ahh I see you get the one that is single mode instead of the one that I have that has 5 modes. It does have a Q5 in mine, while the single mode has an unspecified Cree emitter.

suprisingly it doesn't get all that warm. *I've had this sucker on bright for about 3 minutes and while warm to the touch, it's not hot.

http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.10806

Now that being said, I do NOT think that this driver as with ALL drivers from DX is capable of giving this LED all the current it need to perform at peak efficiency. *This light (Q5) is capable of 228lumens and while I'd like to think that the driver is feeding this LED 1A, I seriously doubt it. *It's one of the reasons I'm asking Lava to build a driver to operate on 1 18650 and provide up to 5A. *Will work for Laser diodes and Light emitting diodes as well. (whew to think he has a hard enough time keeping the flexdrives in stock when the lighting world finds out about these drivers he'll never be able to produce enough)

Sorry threadjack over. Buy this kit it's awesome. Hehehe.

This is a really nice kit, an easy build if you have some basic skills.

I think I will be offering my DIY green build as a kit as well...

DIY Green Kit! I'll make these kits availabe for an easy assembly! All you will need is a battery, a module, and a 1.5mm Allen wrench for the set screws!

For the green kit shown here: http://laserpointerforums.com/laser_...ad.php?t=22520
With everything but the module...

* Host
* Drill the pill and put a set screw in it for a positive contact point
* Heatsink with it's own set screw
* Front piece
* Dust cap

$75 plus shipping...

I've got about 15 or so with more on the way...

I have decided to keep this going. I'm pretty sure it will be a big hit as soon as the word gets out, because it really is an excellent build! 8-)
