Yeah I guess some are really pushing the 12X diodes...

I didn't think a FlexDrive was supposed to handle that kind of current with a 12X, but I see in FrancoRob's compilation graph that some are really pushing them...

I have never even set a FlexDrive that high until this order!

I found that it matters which battery you use when your going for that kind of current in a single battery build this small...

A primary didn't do it. But an RCR123 rechargeable worked. It makes sense. Because of the higher voltage of the rechargeable, it didn't have to draw as much current to boost the voltage needed...

Thanks to Jayrob and Derek, I have built my first 2 lasers! I already had a Wicked Lasers 250 (advertised) green and just built a 405nm PHR-803T at 110ma and a 650nm 20x DVD at 400ma. Both of these burn way batter than my green :) But, I am not sure about the scatter I am getting. I have attached picts of the 3. I can focus the pocket mini kits to any distance but there always seem to be a lot of irregularity in the beam. The center is tight and focused but there seems to be a ring or ellipse around them. Do these look typical? It is possible I didn't press the diodes in far enough? They are flush with the mount. Oh, I am running the lass lens on the 405nm and the acrylic on the 650nm. I have already cleaned them with a q-tip and rubbing alcohol but it didn't seem to help.

Thanks

So with a flex drive do you just set the current at what you want and it will use whatever voltage you give it to power the diode or do you have to also set it for the voltage that your going to be using?

It's not always easy to tell from pictures, because it could be reflection from what ever surface the dot is against...

But the 405-G-1 glass lens does have that 'fan', or 'side splash' on one side.

It does not bother most people because of the huge gain in power. Plus a tighter beam profile as well...

On your red, take a close look at the diode window with a jewelers loupe and see if it is clean...

Ok, thanks for the info. The pictures are pretty representative of what its really looks like. Not a big deal, just wanted to make sure I had it together correctly.

Thanks

So with a flex drive do you just set the current at what you want and it will use whatever voltage you give it to power the diode or do you have to also set it for the voltage that your going to be using?

A FlexDrive will regulate the set current, and the diode will get what ever voltage it needs automatically.

You must have between 2 and 5.5 volts supply.

The drivers are small, and require precise soldering skills. There is a current range that you set first. Then a single turn pot that you use to adjust current within that range.

FlexDrives can be damaged if they are powered without a load. The pot can be damaged if turned too far in either direction.

See here for the documentation and pictures of the current range settings:
http://hacylon.case.edu/ebay/laser_diode/MicroFlexDrive_V5_manual.pdf

Here's a good write up from rog8811 on how to set current with a test load: (he shows a DDL driver, but it is the same procedure for a FlexDrive)
It can be done - Laser driver
