^_^ Excellent as always sir!

This is seriously a LEGENDARY HOST PEOPLES!!! BUY IT!!

It's 3in x 3/4in form factor is a MUST. Just immagine 450mW's of blu-ray goodness shooting out of the end of a gorgeous pocket mini... ohh good times :)

Thanks again for your AMAZNG creations JayRob! you never cease to inspire SHOCK and AWE amongst the laser community! And you'll always have my full support, This man knows what he's doing guys... He truly does.

Trust me when i say you CANT match the quality! FLAWLESS! VBS FLAWLESS!

Tyler - Welcome to Dark Lasers!

Much too generous with your praise man...

But :thanks:

I sent your next box of stuff today. (Sat) Including the Pocket Mini's, and the Tritium marked ones too!

Thanks!
Jay

scythe, I sent your Pocket Mini kit (and other items) today. (Monday)

I have the driver set at 250mA's per our discussion...

Hope your build goes well! :)
Jay

scopeguy20, I sent your Pocket Mini kits (and other items) today. (Thursday)

Thanks Glenn!
Jay

Crossfire, I sent your Pocket Mini kit today. (Friday)

The 'Hot' option is set to 290mA's per your request. I hope you BDR build goes well!
Jay

Hi,

I purchased jayrob's hot option kit, and a 650nm laser diode (20x dvd burner) from hightechdeal, but not having too much luck getting it to work.

When I put 3 volts onto the casing, it draws about 50ma (shouldn't it be near 350ma)? On the diode itself I measure about 6.5v!

Is there any way to see if the diode is still good? I thought I was gentle to it, but perhaps some esd issue? Should I try injecting 3v directly to the diode (300ma) without using the pill/flex circuitry?

Not sure what is going on, but correct testing connections may be part of the problem...

Do you have a test load to check the driver? I am sure it was set properly when I sent it. I always double check the settings.

Also, be careful about powering the driver without a load. This can damage it.

Have you considered contacting Dark about his build/repair service?
Jay

Thanks,

Not sure what is meant by correct testing connections...

At this point, I'm just trying to isolate where the problem could be. I'll disconnect the diode, but what kind of load (ohms) should I put at the output of the flex circuit leads to test? What should be the voltage I see across this load (3v?)?

With the diode isolated removed from the flex, I'll also try powering that up by its lonesome... I'll set the current limit to 300ma, and 3v?

Thanks!

That's what I meant... Testing a FlexDrive requires a proper test load. If you do not have a proper test load, and also have it connected with your DMM properly, then you will not be able to get the correct readings.

Take a look at this page on testing a DDL driver from rog8811. It is full of excellent information on making a test load, how to connect everything using your DMM, and explains many things.
It can be done - Laser driver

Half way down his page, it will start to talk about test loads and connections...

It is the same with a FlexDrive. But a FlexDrive can be damaged if you power it without a load.

FlexDrive:
One of the things you must understand, is that the diode will take what ever voltage it needs. (same with other drivers) You are not trying to regulate the voltage. Just make sure you have between 2.5 and 5.5 volts for the supply. (FlexDrive)

It is the current that you will regulate with the adjustment of the FlexDrive...

Ahh.. gatcha..

Well, I haven't powered the flex drive without the diode so that shouldn't be the cause of the problem.

At the moment in order to measure the current, I'm using a bench power supply (current limited to 300ma), instead of the battery, to drive the flex. I'll put a load of a few diodes in series (and a 1ohm resistor) and measure the voltage across the resistor and across the diodes.

As for checking the diode itself, would it be worthwhile to drive it briefly without the flex circuit (just the 3v power supply direct, 100ma) just to see if it goes on?

Thanks!

I really want to emphasize studying the information in the link I posted to rog8811's site...

About the FlexDrive, it is much more complex than a DDL driver. It will test the same way as the DDL, as far as checking for current. But being a boost/buck driver, it is very interesting how it works for supplying needed voltage with a single battery.

With a blu-ray diode, which needs 4.5 to even 6 volts (8X), using a single 3.6 volt battery (or 3 volt), you can see that the battery is less voltage than the diode needs to run. So in order to supply the correct voltage that the diode is asking for, the FlexDrive uses extra current from the battery to 'boost' voltage.

So, if you have your current adjusted to regulate for example 200mA's, the driver will draw much more current from the battery to supply the 200mA's to the blu-ray diode at a higher voltage than the battery is supplying.

With a red diode/single battery/FlexDrive set up, you won't be pulling extra current to boost voltage, because the diode is only asking for about 2 volts.

So in conclusion, you will not go wrong if you follow the instructions shown by the link I posted to rog8811's site.

And also, it may be possible that your 300mA bench supply is not enough current?? I would recommend setting/testing current with what ever battery supply you will be using, along with a proper test load.

About the diode, I would not check it without a proper driver myself...

Man, that is one nice clean little kit you got going!

Thanks! I hope you can try it out!...

sim_sum, your Pocket Mini Kit with 'Hot' option is shipping today. (Monday)

Set to 120mA's. (blu-ray test load)

:thanks:

Hey, I'm new at thsi forum and I've some Questions:
What will i need for building a "burning" laser except this kit?
And were can i buy it?
thank you in advance

Man.. such a nice host! I wish i could afford it lol.
Maybe for my next build haha.
Keep up the good work Jay!

If you got a kit with 'Hot' option, then all you would need is a battery, and a diode/AixiZ module.

Here is a post that shows what is needed for assembly if you get the 'Hot' option. (driver installed and current pre-set)
http://laserpointerforums.com/f39/fs-pocket-mini-build-kit-easy-assembly-22537-5.html#post479406

You can get diodes pressed into AixiZ modules from several sellers on the forum. Two are Dark Lasers, and HighTechDealZ...
