Great job with that build!

I could have sworn that I saw a little driver circuit in one of those... But it doesn't matter, this happens with the Pocket Mini host too. Sometimes there is a little circuit on the board. In this case, you just scrape off the components, and solder on a couple of lead wires for your driver supply...

The only beef I have with this is the battery holster... half the time it doesn't even work. I had to use a different 3x's AAA holster to get this working again. But it may be due to the 10440's, which have very small and flat tips for the positive side of the battery.

You should be able to fix that small issue...

See this picture:

The battery holder (whether it be black or clear), has these small 'plastic tabs' at a couple of points where the POSITIVE end of the batteries need to make contact with the flat metal contact points.

The thickness of the tabs, may not let the battery make it's connection. Or have a weak connection. Use a knife and 'snap' or cut the tabs to make sure your batteries make good contact.

Yes it is a nice host! I hope they stay available. Because the last couple of side button builds I showed, the hosts became discontinued...

It was Zithras who showed me the DX link and asked if it would work. I could tell just from the DX pictures that it would make a good mod. When ever the head comes apart like that, and there is a pill that unscrews from the body, it will be a great host for modification!

I am considering this kit or your pocket mini kit, but I'm undecided as to which I should get. I like the idea of rechargeable AA batteries since I have lots of those, but the look of the pocket mini is great. Any suggestions?

This host will give you the option of using rechargeable AAA batteries if you use a FlexDrive.

Same option goes for the Pocket mini! (CR123 or RCR123) But sometimes the RCR123 fits a little snug in the Pocket Mini because of the protection circuit. But you can try different batteries and find one that fits nice...

The biggest difference besides that is size:



The Pocket Mini is much smaller. This makes it a little more challenging to build, but is still a fairly easy build. As long as you understand how to set current on a FlexDrive using a proper test load.

Which is the case for both builds. Getting the 'Hot' option on either kit will make for an easy assembly...

Are instructions provided? And does the battery holder come with it?

Yes, the host comes with it's battery pack/holder. (batteries not included) I do include a basic instruction sheet. But it is not a step by step 'how to' press your diode into an AixiZ module and all of that.

There are good tutorials in the tutorials and help section...

These Side button MXDL's are amazing! I've just finished working with one, made an 8x blu-ray build (S03.. dont get excited)

And i must say, this host makes it FEEL like im using a green laser, but it's blu-ray! cuz of the side button. It's a nice feeling, I like it.

Very durrable, Dependable.

You guys should give this host a try if you havent! plenty of space to work in, no fear of small spaces here

Yeah I'm surprised that these have not been as popular as the 3405. (same battery configuration)

It's a much nicer host! (IMO)



And the price of the host/heatsink combo is only $35 plus shipping...

I still offer the FlexDrive 'Hot' option to make the build really easy. (see first post)

On top of the great build jay... I think people should know that this host does a tale stand. I for one love this feature.

slashdavid, I sent your Side Button combo (and other combo) today. (Tuesday)

I just got the package, and it looks great. It's even smaller than I thought it would be, and it looks like the build will be even easier. Unfortunately, the module I ordered Friday, Didn't ship out until yesterday, so I guess I'll have to wait.
Tomorrow I'm going to the hardware store and pick up the supplies to make one of Warske's IR thermometer power meters. Then at least I'll have a ballpark power to post.
