Hey Jay, these are real fine kits, I will get 2 of the chrome ones as soon as the funds are here. Thanks for all the great kits pal! -Glenn

Rayfoss

The rayfoss driver is setup to be case positive. Look at the pic, you have anode, cathode, and case pin. And you'll just use one 10440 and a spacer.

Ahh ok. I'm still waiting on the rayfoss driver / 10440s

Trying to decide what to use.

rayfoss with 2x aaa (1,5v)
rayfoss with 2x 10440s (wired in parallel, tricky to do)

rkcstr (with 1117) and 2x 10440s
rkcstr (with 1117) and 2x aaa (1.5v)

well, the rayfoss with 2 AAA's is not gonna have much run time. Wiring those in parallel will be very hard. And running the rkcstr with 3v is going to damage a diode.

For a red build, you will be fine with a rkcstr using 2 X 10440 batteries in a pen.

But for a blu-ray, you would better off using a FlexDrive and 2 X AAA batteries...

Re: FS: New Pen Host Kits! All Parts Included - Nice!

But the 1117 chip has a dropout voltage of 1.2v

So a rkcstr with 1117 should be fine with 2 x 10440's right?

Instead of 2.2v + 5v = 7.2v min
It would be : 1.2v + 5v = 6.2v min

(first being dropout voltage, 2nd being ~voltage needed by phr)

Not following you there...

As far as I know, the best solution for a blu-ray in a pen, is to use a FlexDrive with 2 X normal AAA batteries...

the rkcstr needs at LEAST 2.2v over diode voltage, so let's say 2.5v to be safe. so you need at LEAST 7-7.5v (depending on diode voltage drop, which varies for every diode). So 8.4v with two lithium ion batteries at full charge will give you short run times. Jayrob is right, best bet is flexdrive and two AAA's.

Now as far as the rayfoss driver goes, it may work OK in a pen host, but it is boost only, not buck/boost like the Flexdrive. Which means that excess voltage is converted to heat on the rayfoss driver. I can't imagine it getting any hotter than the rkcstr, but don't quote me on that.

So, the rayfoss driver might be a cheaper option, but the Flexdrive will still give you more stability, and longer run times.

Not if you swap the regulator with the new 1117

Then it needs 1.2v on top of diode voltage

Excellent. I will surely let you know how they do.

So that'll be a fun day coming up soon, putting together 15 leadlights and ~5 more PHR aixiz modules for use in labs.

hmm glenn is that my order?? :p

@ Tabish, hmm im using an o-like driver on one of my builds, you have to be very careful. Even if you set its mA on 100mA sometimes this driver undergoes a current spike which might destroy your diode. i prefer rckstr driver with 2 10440 or much better with flexdrive.

I heard about the voltage spike issue. Thats why I got a bunch of 47nF caps.

It should take care of the spike problem. (or so I am told)

EDIT: I am talking about the rayfoss driver. I'll use it for my 2nd phr in 1 x 10440 host. The rkcstr with 1117 regulator goes in jay's pen host.

Jay i got a question, how can i Integrate the Front cover of the Pen host to the Focusing lens of the Aixiz, because if i use a glue such as mightybond i know it will damage the lens. do you have a custom spacer that we can use to do this?
