Jay was nice to send me one for my help, but I have ordered another one from him and I paid for it. They are worth every penny and really keep the diode cool. I look at it this way:

$12.00 for the MXDL
$22.00 for the heatsink.
$45.00 for a Meredith Module with glass lens
$35.00 for a DVD burner with an open can diode.
$6.00 for parts give or take a buck or two.

The heatsink looks nice. Great idea. Q's about parts:

Gazoo, your list says $45 for the Meredith module. The LDC-2 is $35, right? Did you have some other module in mind?

Also (anyone?), what is the best source for a High-power diode? Is it really necessary to buy a DVD burner for this? If so, which burner?

Also looking for the schematic for the driver, if anyone has a pointer.
[/quote]

I can answer that for Gazoo...The Meredith Glass lens module is $35 plus shipping:
http://www.mi-lasers.com/cgi-bin/shopper.cgi?search=action&keywords=diode_optics
Here is DDL's thread for the driver which shows schematics:

http://www.laserpointerforums.com/forums/YaBB.pl?num=1185701612
The driver that we are using for these MXDL mods, is the same as the diagrams in DDL's thread, except that we are not using a pot. And the resistor is just a single, 3 ohm resistor, giving you a fixed current of 420mA's. I'm sure tha a 3.3 ohm resistor would be pretty good too at about 380mA's.

Also, take a look at the drawings on this 'Heatsink Tips' page:
http://www.sonic.net/~jayrob/MXDLHeatsinkTips.doc

As for the LD, the best advice is to harvest one from one of these two drives:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827129017
Or,
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827118003
The latter is cheapest, and easier to harvest. The diodes are the same.

There are a couple of people selling the diodes. Not sure if they still are. One was TheMonk.

The heatsinks are specifically for the MXDL that DDL first showed in his DIY Laser Torch thread. This one:
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.4171

By the way, Daedal has some very good close up pictures of inside the MXDL on the first page of his thread:
http://www.laserpointerforums.com/forums/YaBB.pl?num=1186966870

Just let me know when you want one. You will not be disappointed...

NVM, my bad, its 35 for the module, 2 for the 5.6 --> 9mm adaptor, and thne shipping...

lol

but if you PM "themonk", he will most likely have an open can to spare for you. hes my stop for open cans lol...

Excellent info. Thanks to all. Looking at Daedal's DIY thread (drilling fender washers, etc), I see why the heatsink makes so much sense, even if it were just for mounting.

Jayrob, you should consider making a complete case. A major glitch in making these things seems to be in adapting mechanical parts. You've solved part of that. The rest of the housing could probably be made with some stock aluminum or plastic tubing to house the CR123's. Space for a standard push-button switch (Digikey would have a bunch). I thought of this when considering heat transfer to the outside world...you may be able to machine something to adapt the Aixiz/Meredith modules to a standard finned heatsink so the fins would be external. Probably larger, but it would look pretty cool. Just a thought for a future model...

Re the heads-up on the Meredith module...yeah, I may have forgotten the adapter. I would have been pissed.

The housings from DealExtreme look appropriate, but they're in Hong Kong. No vendors in the USA? I guess I could expect weeks in shipping time.

Yeah, figure 3 weeks for DX. But the shipping is free, and you can't beat the prices. Too much work/cost to make a host. Not when you can get an MXDL for $12 bucks. They are a great host. Kenom is making (having made) some awesome custom barrels in the 'Group Buy' section. But you'll have to wait for the next GB...

Re: ***MXDL Custom Machined Heatsinks***

I have this extra 3.6 volt lithium charger that I got with my last RPL. It is brand new and unopened. It charges three different size lithium batteries. 18650, 17670, and RCR123. Charges two at a time, or just one at a time. Led indicator light is red while charging, and turns green when fully charged.

I am offering it to anyone who buys a heatsink that I will already be shipping. Just let me know and I will add it to the package for an additional $5.00. For example, if you are in the U.S., the flat rate shipping for a heatsink is $3 bucks. So:
Heatsink - $20
Shipping to U.S. - $3
Charger - $5
Total - $28

Just this one charger available...

Sorry Steve...Chances are, after your get your MXDL, and see how nice that heatsink fits in there, you'll want to make another with a Meredith module this time!

looks good! but, DX finally agreed to send me the chargers I ordred but never recieved...

looks like that once DX charger, but on DX they say the RCR123 slots dont work unless you mod them.. nad that onces more expensive...

I guess this is a good deal, its from optotronics, so im sure the slots on this one work, and its cheaper!

i might be in for a heatsink for the blu-ray mod in the 10 dollar MXDL soon....

well, I brough the MXDL back from the dead!! :D

stupid USPS, look what they did to the package (The open can itself was secured in a "container", and thanks to TheMonk's creative "container", the fragile, unmoduled open can came out in perferct conddition!):

Daaaaaaamn!!! That's so messed up. ;D
It's good to know your diode is fine, at least now I don't have to worry about mine arriving broken since you say the monk did a good job protecting the diode.
What type of diode did you get, long or short open can??

Re: ***MXDL Custom Machined Heatsinks***

*New* I also have the heatsink dimensions for making it fit perfectly into this 3 X AAA (size battery - use 3.6 volt 10440) MXDL, which makes a very nice Blu-Ray host!:
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.3405
blu-5.jpg

For a Blu-Ray, the heatsink is mostly just for 'looks'. But, if you are making a Blu-Ray BURNER (http://www.laserpointerforums.com/forums/YaBB.pl?num=1202396141/60 ), from a Blu-Ray writer harvest, you may want to use the heatsink. Or, if you just want a really nice Blu-Ray using this host!
