I am going to order one later this week.  It looks great! ;D  I only have a couple questions...

- Are the heat sinks for the Aixiz and the Merideth modules the same?  Or do are they different?

- What type of battery do you recommend for for this using a DDL LM317 based driver?

- How much thermal paste should I use?  I've heard that too much can actually make it worse.  :-/

This looks like a GREAT heat sink and I am very exited about ordering one soon! ;D

the aixiz and meridith modules are different, you have to specify which you want.

the meridiths modules are a lot more expensive, but easier whne you need to change diodes, and such.

the aixiz are the cheap solution, but to get full power order a $6 AR coated glass lens from Dr. Lava, as the aixiz come with acrylics. the meridiths already come with glass lenses, so your fine there.

dont use thermal paste, trust me its not needed.

use 2 rechargable CR123's (3.6v) like seen here: http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.3273

buy a charger from Deal extreme also

so, your cart should include:

http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.3273
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.6672
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.4171
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.1888 (for faster shipping, it only costs $.01)

How do I buy the glass lenses from dr. lava? Is there a thread somewhere? I already tried searching and couldn't find anything.

You just have to PM drlava to see if he has any available. amk has answered your questions the same as I would have. Just PM me when you are ready for a heatsink...

geek, got your PayPal and made your heatsink yesterday. It's in the envelope and I'll be dropping it off this morning. Not sure how long it will be to get to Honolulu, but probably this week! Aloha to my home town! I was born in Honolulu many moons ago bra...

Edit: Post office closed today. I will drop it off Tuesday morning though!

Yes these are very nice heatsinks and make doing the MXDL mod very easy. Jay was nice to send me one for my help, but I have ordered another one from him and I paid for it. They are worth every penny and really keep the diode cool. I look at it this way:

$12.00 for the MXDL
$22.00 for the heatsink.
$45.00 for a Meredith Module with glass lens
$35.00 for a DVD burner with an open can diode.
$6.00 for parts give or take a buck or two.

The heatsink looks nice. Great idea. Q's about parts:

Gazoo, your list says $45 for the Meredith module. The LDC-2 is $35, right? Did you have some other module in mind?

Also (anyone?), what is the best source for a High-power diode? Is it really necessary to buy a DVD burner for this? If so, which burner?

Also looking for the schematic for the driver, if anyone has a pointer.

the module is 35, but you need a 5.6 to 9mm adaptor for the diode to work in that, which costs 10 bucks, hence 45

open cans are the best, IMO. You can get these from "TheMonk" who often sells extracted ones for around 28-35 bucks

there are also DVD drives on newegg right now for 23.99 shipped, those have open cans too.

there is a schematic for a LD river in the experiments and mods section, but I can get a simplified version for you of the one in use in the MXDL

I can answer that for Gazoo...The Meredith Glass lens module is $35 plus shipping, but you will need the 5.6mm adapter as well:
http://www.mi-lasers.com/cgi-bin/shopper.cgi?search=action&keywords=diode_optics

Here is DDL's thread for the driver which shows schematics:
http://www.laserpointerforums.com/forums/YaBB.pl?num=1185701612
The driver that we are using for these MXDL mods, is the same as the diagrams in DDL's thread, except that we are not using a pot. And the resistor is just a single, 3 ohm resistor, giving you a fixed current of 420mA's. I'm sure that a 3.3 ohm resistor would be pretty good too at about 380mA's.

Also, take a look at the pictures on this 'Heatsink Tips' page:
http://www.sonic.net/~jayrob/MXDLHeatsinkTips.doc

As for the LD, the best advice is to harvest one from one of these two drives:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827129017
Or,
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827118003
The latter is cheapest, and easier to harvest. The diodes are the same.

There are a couple of people selling the diodes. Not sure if they still are. One was TheMonk.

The heatsinks are specifically for the MXDL that DDL first showed in his 'DIY Laser Torch thread'. This one:
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.4171

By the way, Daedal has some very good close up pictures of inside the MXDL on the first page of his thread:
http://www.laserpointerforums.com/forums/YaBB.pl?num=1186966870

Just let me know when you want one. You will not be disappointed...
