Default FS: Hexagon Heatsinks For Your Projects!

These are designed with the O-like Green Modules in mind, but I can fit the center hole for AixiZ, Meredith, or Green modules!

These heatsinks are probably overkill as far as mass goes. I just ordered some 1" X 1" hexagon material. They should be great for those labby style projects!

Just let me know what size module to fit them for!

* $20 plus $3 dollars for shipping and handling...
* Please read my shipping policy here!

The only thing I could see to improve this is to make a set screw on the bottom. This allows you to securely fasten it in your spyrograph/scanner.

I figure that they would have to be shimmed or aligned into place...

I have found that an easy thing to use is 5 minute Quick set putty. It can be formed into what ever shape or angle needed.

But lots of options to make something like this work for each application!

By the way, thanks for suggesting this to me Ken. I hope some people will find them useful...

I hope people see the value as much as I do. *I've got these (pics below), and they are great for scanner or spyro projects. *Although I'd rather see the screw hole in the bottom so that it can be tweaked after you've set it in place for beam alignment. *Yes you could put it in place with some quick set putty but once it's there, there is no adjustment or alignment. *And that is pretty critical as your setup changes and needs to be tweaked.

Nice heatsinks, bit expensive though.

But how would you make the aixiz touch the case to remove heat?

That's what the set screw is for. It will hold the module tight, pressing it against the inside of the heatsink and of course making contact with the module itself.

These set screws require a 1.5mm Allen wrench just like all of my heatsinks. (Allen wrench not incuded)

Ken, I could easily put a threaded mounting hole in the heatsink. I would just need to know the thread size and desired location!

a 12" piece of 1" hex 6061 from McMasterCarr is like $16 - that's gotta be at least 12 of your "heat sinks" Throw in $0.60 for a really good setscrew and with shipping from McMasterCarr you're talking $20 each for your "Labor".

It's more than just the labor, it's having the right tools (and replacing them when needed), the time involved in the communication, packaging... there's PayPal fees, organization and shipping...

And of course, it better be fit correctly and have the set screw in the right spot.

Anyway, feel free to offer some heatsinks for cheaper. After you make a few hundred of them, see if you still think it is worth your time.
Jay

P.S. I just dropped the price some...

I have an idea on how to improve the thermal efficiency of the heatsink. I am taking this from the principles used in CPU heatsinks on computers.

If you look at the 'sink in the picture there is a lot of solid space. What if you drilled many small holes parallel to the main chamber where the module rests? This would increase the surface area exposed to the are allowing the heatsink to cool faster and thus cool the module faster as well. Not sure how well this will work without a fan but hey always need to try something new right?
