I clean the lenses with a micro fiber cloth before mounting them into the modified AixiZ nut...

The 'splash' is something similar to what you see with a Meredith glass lens. In fact, any optic that tries to clip a flat beam to make it round will have some of these effects. That's why the AixiZ acrylic lens has a small hole at the back of the lens. Leaving it like that will make a rounder dot. But at the sacrifice of power!

The huge gain in power, as well as a tight intense burning dot and very nice beam, are good trades for having a little 'side splash' with this 405-G-1 glass lens mod! *(IMHO) *

Others who have much experience, such as rkcstr and daguin have agreed.

Looking for input from Milo, as well as some of the others that I have shipped to Monday...
Jay

If the splash is that big of a deal you could always put an aperture after the lens that just lets the collimated light through.

This FS thread is for the 405-G-1 glass lens modification that is for use with a blu-ray build using an AixiZ module if that's what you mean...

dos it look like a green laser after you breathe on the lens, sort of like radiating lines and/or dots?

At the 1st post of this thread are some different pictures and other comments about how the dot and beam will be with the use of this lens mod...

Not sure what you mean about the green laser and breathing on the lens...

Thanks for the quick delivery Jay !

OH BOY *!! *

i must say THIS IS A BIG DEAL! *Its a new age of efficient use of out diodes. * I will write more tomorrow as I'm burned out today as much as i can be. BUt I'll just say this.

My STINGRAY !! outputs 336mW without any lens on Kenometer. With this lens it outputs 321mW !! ( With acrylic cutout lens 258mW)

I am impressed.

see you tomorrow guys with more feedback.

Yeah, I would be interested to see how much power is lost in all the splash myself. Jay, maybe you could try this for reference purposes? Basically 'cut off' all the splash and things that make the dot less round, and take a measurement reading.

Would be funny if all the extra power was in the splash ;D

Hey Jay,

thanks for letting me know you shipped my lens out *
That little fella's gonna make my already-impressive Daguin DJR 6x real-scary-like... * *;D

For everyone's info only, a while back I compiled a few key notes from Igor's feeler thread. It only shows that Igor was aiming for some kind of balance between power & beauty. Frankly, I can't wait to get my hands on your lens, Jay * and if I want beauty, I'll play with my Mean Jay Green or one of my other DPSS lasers... *:P

------------------

Anyways, here's the data I mined a while back from Igor's Feeler thread:

Quote:

Okay... now I'm up to speed, or at least mostly up to speed. I'll up my order to four (4) of the lenses*. Since you stated that these lenses would only be available via group buys, better safe than sorry *:P

*The lens being number 8 of the 9 tested (aka no. 2 of the "final three", aka broadband, aka one bad-ass mofo, aka who else knows what). This based on what I read a, ah, "few pages back"...:

Just to clear one thing up. There won't be two types of coatings. We could afford two types with any of the first six lenses, but not with these. Luckily these have a broadband coating, which is very good at just around 405nm and 660nm. I did a comparison with a lens coated specifically for 405nm, and there is less than one percent of a difference, resulting from the difference in reflections.

So the broadband is more than just good enough, especially since as it is, the lens brings more of an increase than expected. When i thought the number would be under 20%, 0.8% more could bring it a bit closer.... But we are over 20% even for diodes with the lowest losses in acrylics.

And if one lens can do both, it's both cheaper, less complicated and more practical for everyone...

So we will have one universal lens instead of two. There is no need to specify the coating, because the best lens so far comes with a 400-700nm coating. Basically, everyone just needs to figure out how many they want. They will work with any visible wavelength diode, reducing reflections to less than 1% on average and even less with reds and blu rays...
--------------------------------------------------

It's been like this..
Manufacturer 1:
- v1 - the original custom lens, 30 pieces - FAIL - spherical abberations

Manufacturer 2:
- Doesn't even pick up the phone anymore unless caught off guard, in which case they say "next week".

"Manufacturer" 3:
- v2 - first custom lens rescue attempt, 2 samples - FAIL - bubble gum lens?
- v3 - second rescue attempt, 2 samples - WORKS! Oh wait, no it doesn't? Wait, now it does? - FAIL - astigmatic lens/low quality

At this point i realized i was relying too much on too few manufacturers, and went nuts, and started searching for other options, by writing and calling more than ten new manufacturers.

I found:

"Manufacturer" 3's actual manufacturer:
- v4 - third resue attempt, one sample - FAIL - this is a lens? *:-/
- v5 - fourth rescue attempt, one sample *- FAIL - this was the first lens that was scratched before i got my hands on it, seems like it was made like this :-?
- v6 - fifth rescue attempt, one sample - FAIL - could almost work, has holes in the beam, quality too low

From the whole bunch v3 and v6 were the best, and yet they were horrible... *:'(
v1 was and still is the highest quality lens (precision machined lens), but it's spherical, and as such useless for us.
Here end the cheap lenses.

Luckily i also found:

Manufacturer 4:
- wanted to send representatives from France and Germany for a tour of my company, and to convince me to buy quality lenses at 68 EURO each for one piece and 40 EURO each for up to 500 pieces. They said we could talk about the price, once we get to larger quantities. They just didn't seem to understand that 250 pieces is a HUGE quantity for us... But i did get some usefull info.

Manufacturer 5:
- Lens #1 - WORKS!
- Lens #2 - WORKS even better!
- Lens #3 - increases the power the most, but has gaps in the beam - probably rejects from the high quality version. Not suitable for our needs, luckily this one was free. They were probably hoping that we don't need quality and that they could sell their rejects. The quality version costs twice as much as the first two of their lenses.

So we are now actually at lens 7-9, and v7 (Lens #1) & v8 (Lens #2) are the best so far.... The latter increasing the power the most.

We will go with the 8th custom lens attempt, for max power and thinnest beam. But i am hoping i can also order some of the first lens, because it makes a "cleaner" spot, due to the medium NA clipping the ugly edges of the fast axis, and creates a "fatter" beam..

Lens #2 will bring out all there is, so the spot shape will depend ONLY on the diode output shape. It's the only way to get all the power out, and means, that diodes with a weird shape output will create weird shape spots... As diodes get better, so will the spots..

It is usual in pointers to go for a lossy option, such as clipping the output with a low NA of the lens, to make the spot rounder, cleaner and prettier.
- An AixiZ lens for example actually makes a pretty nice, rounded off spot, due to the low NA of 0.3...
- Lens #1 creates a flatter spot, but still with a slightly rounded off fast axis, because the NA is 0.4.
- Lens #2 has a NA of 0.55 and brings out the entire output and creates a spot in the same shape.
--------------------------------------------------

These [last three lens samples] are high quality precision grade aspherics. Unlike all the others, these were designed for laser diodes. They even have diode window thickness compensation! Other than collimating the beam, their shape also undistorts the spherical abberations caused by the diode window! These are diffraction limited lenses! Lenses where the size of the foused spot depends only on the wavelength! These are lenses, that could write a disk!
--------------------------------------------------

And finally, a nice synopsis:
NA
Lens #1: 0.40
Lens #2: 0.55
Lens #3: 0.60

FL
Lens #1: 6.30 mm
Lens #2: 4.56 mm
Lens #3: 4.02 mm

Coating
Lens#1: *405nm and 660nm
Lens #2: 405nm and 660nm
Lens #3: 408nm

Power Output Improvement (Based on a 6x diode and Aixiz acrylic lens)
Lens #1: +16.6 %
Lens #2: +24.2 %
Lens #3: * No Data

Power Output Improvement (Based on a high wavelength PHR diode and Aixiz acrylic lens)
Lens #1: +17.5 %
Lens #2: +26.0 %
Lens #3: +26.0 %

Focusing and Burning (Data still to be properly valuated)
Lens #1: *Good?
Lens #2: *Some focusing and burning - less than a long FL?

Default Re: FS: 405-G-1 Glass Lens Mod-28% Increase vs Aix

That's a very good collection of information you have put together there!...

I really did not want to disrupt Igor's future GB, and I hope this 405-G-1 glass lens mod is not going to stop that from happening or anything.

In fact, Igor is the one person that I have made several efforts to contact so that I can get one of these lenses in his hands to compare. But he has not responded.

None the less, how could I not share the discovery of this awesome lens? And the way that I found a very nice way to mount it into the metal lens nut and have the focus ring just perfect! 8-)

I had to at least show what I had found. There is no way of knowing at this point whether this lens is as good, or better than Igor's best lens. A direct, side by side comparison needs to be made to know for sure. I would say that the best comparison thus far, is the Meredith glass lens...

Default Re: FS: 405-G-1 Glass Lens Mod-28% Increase vs Aix

As Jay has informed me of the dedicated thread relevant to the new lens 405-G-1, I'm here to show with more details my personal experience with this new optical jewel. To support this review I have added some pictures, I hope they will help for a better understanding...

When I received the lens, already installed in the reworked nut and completed with the "finger grip" focus ring (great job, Jay ), according to Jay suggestions the first check has been to verify the length of the threaded nut part, just to avoid any risk to push the lens against the diode while screwing the nut deep inside the heat sink (as you can see in Fig. 1, the threaded part of the 405-G-1 nut is 3 mm longer than the AixiZ). In my case the top surface of the diode was 7.2 mm inside the heatsink, so a washer thickness of 0.9 mm was already sufficient for the job.

I reworked a brass washer (with sand paper) till to reduce its original thickness from 1.8 mm till to 1.2 mm, as it was sufficient to guarantee a little bit more than the focus-to-infinite for the lens while giving more "safe" room to the nut completely screwed in, and the Fig. 2 shows the 405-G-1 happily installed with the relevant washer.

Just one word for the spring: the original spring, completely compressed, has shown a length of 2.0 mm. This length, added to the useful length of the 405-G-1 nut (8mm less 1.2 mm of the washer), gives a total of 8.8 mm, while the available space between the top of the heat sink and the diode side has been found to be 8.6 mm. This confirms the goodness of Jay suggestion, to cut a pair of spring turns to have it working properly.

Then the tests ! As you can see in Fig. 3, in this case the "standard lens" Output Power (measured with my LaserBee I deLuxe) has been 121mW; I have carried out several O.P. tests, and the average value has been 120mW. Fig. 4 shows the relevant graph and how flat is the curve of the O.P. during the test time, thanks to IgorT modified driver.

Replaced the "standard AixiZ lens with the new 405-G-1, the new O.P. has shown a stunning 154mW (also this test has been repeated several times, showing a constant output) (see Fig. 5 and 6): that means a 28% increase, as Jay has already verified too!! ;D ;D

By comparing Fig. 3 and Fig. 5, you can also notice the difference in "shape" of the beam, focused to infinity, with a more elongated oval and a small side "splash" in case of the new lens.

What can I say! My BR has been implemented of 34mW just adding this new glass lens, and I'm enthusiast of it; in another thread of this Forum I have shown my "Standard lens" BR cutting a toothpick in a little bit less than 5 minutes, but with the new lens the same job required only 1' and 18". My personal opinion is that the "splash" is not disturbing, and in the meanwhile that I'm waiting to see the new Igor lens I'm more than happy to have this lens supplying 154mW!

The last Fig. 7 is dedicated to those willing to see how the BR beam with the new lens is.
I took this picture just opening the window of my room, so no fog, no smoke: a simply picture taken during a clean night with a 30" exposure; the "thing" in the lower side of the picture is the low strut of the window. Unfortunately I live in a small town, and the light of the houses and streets has reduced a little bit the brilliance of the beam: also the sky shows the reflection of the town lights; the small segment you can see in the sky are the traces of the stars moving during the 30" exposure.

Sure, 154mW for a simply Phr diode are a damned good value, I cannot imagine how would be the beam of a 512mW monster like that tested in these days by Daguin...well, for the moment I have a damned good lens, and I'll wait patiently to transfer it on a 8x BR in the future, when such diodes will be more available and at a looooower cost.... 8-)

Default Re: FS: 405-G-1 Glass Lens Mod-28% Increase vs Aix

FrancoRob, thanks for posting this information! Very glag that you like the 405-G-1 glass lens mod!

Good pictures too...

Just to mention that the length of the lens nut is needed in order to get the 405 lens close enough to the diode for proper focus. And that I warn of possibly screwing it too close only as a precaution.

I don't think it could touch the diode, as long as the spring is the proper length, because when the spring compresses, it will stop the nut from threading any farther down. But the warning is just to turn your laser on before the lens is threaded all the way down, and then focus it into the proper position...

Good job!
Jay

Ciao, Franco!

a 34mW increase, not bad! We're talking what, an increase of 34/120... almost 30% *8-)

Jay was right, this lens is a winner *

Default Re: FS: 405-G-1 Glass Lens Mod-28% Increase vs Aix

Ciao Traveller,
the increase is 28 %, and the further good characteristic is that it's a glass lens, thus capable to sustain really strong O.P., where the acrylics may only deteriorate..... this is why I'm waiting for a future success of the 8x..., 12x....etc...

Ebbene s, se son rose fioriranno.... ;D
