My lenses arrived today very impressed. Big improvement to the burning power!

For my leadlight blu-ray I simply swapped lenses. I didn't need to cut the spring at all.

For my kryton groove blu-ray I had to remove the spring entirely, it didn't fit very well. It got to a point where there wasn't enough room for my fingers to turn it, had to use a tool instead.

I use both the cut spring, as well as the Teflon for my personal builds...

But the 'cut spring' is really optional, as I mention in my instruction sheet. If you have a couple of wraps of Teflon, it will be nice and 'wobble free'.

You'll love the Kryton fit once I get you one of my new Kryton EzFocus adapters!

Default Re: FS: 405-G-1 Glass Lens Mod-28% Increase vs Aix

Got my package from you today!

I must say I'm impressed with the lens... I don't have an LPM, though my DT8011 bluray used to only smoke things with careful focus (aixiz 650 coated glass ) and steady hands, now it burns white objects without me even trying... I also stuck it in a 16x red I have and I was able to smoke electrical tape from about five feet away no problem. (despite the focusing problems I'll mention in a bit)

I did (and do) have some issues with it though... The first module head I screwed it into was very stubborn... I'm not sure if it's the threads in the module head or the threading on the lens, but I had to use pliers and quite a bit of force to get it to screw in more than half way.. Upon unscrewing it of course the focusing ring came off, so I needed to take the pliers to the lens nut head directly, and in doing so I messed up those threads pretty bad. After a good 15 minutes of constantly screwing it in and out I was able to get it in 75% of the way, so I removed it from the aixiz and went over the threads with an exacto knife to take off the paint on the threads. After that I was able to force it down to the point where the focusing ring touches the module head, though I'm still not getting focus. When I stuck it in my red I got the same problem, even with it screwed all the way into the module it's not quite attaining focus.. I'm going to have to play with it more tonight, see if I can get it in a smoky room so I can see if I'm getting a beam waist somewhere. It seems it goes from a pie sized spot to a dime sized spot in less than a quarter turn of the focusing ring.. I see what you mean about touchy focus! Too bad I can't really focus it on the fly, I really do need to use pliers, so I can't really see if I've gotten the correct focus till I fire it up.
I can't see needing a spring or teflon tape for this lens, it's so incredibly hard to screw into modules there is absolutely no wiggle room. I noticed a bit of glue (or some kind of gunk) in the threads, maybe it might be a good idea to screw each lens into a module at least once to "break it in".

Other than the stickiness issue, it does what it says on the box, I can certainly tell I'm getting more power!

Default Re: FS: 405-G-1 Glass Lens Mod-28% Increase vs Aix

For sure something is wrong. I don't at this point know what, possibly it got cross threaded. But no matter why or how, it is not good to keep it that way. If you send it back to me, I will install the lens into another AixiZ lens nut. The lens nut is the cheap part of this modification.

They thread in very easily, and need Teflon tape to take the 'wobble' out. So it must have gotten cross threaded. I don't see how else it could be that bad. Hopefully your modules are not damaged...

If I see that it is cross threaded, then you can pay $8 bucks for the replacement nut and return shipping. Fair enough?

Default Re: FS: 405-G-1 Glass Lens Mod-28% Increase vs Aix

pseudolobster;

I think I have also seen the problem you are experiencing with the reversed lens assembly.

I modify a lot of the brass lens assemblies for the lenses I use and sell.

I thread them backwards into a machined holding device for disassembly.

Some of them refuse to thread in.

Upon closer inspection, the problem is right next to the slot provided to adjust the lens.

The slot has formed a slight metal flap that interferes with the thread.
Edit - White Circle in Image

Take off the focus ring, & try threading the lens assembly in, with the slot on the outside.

If it threads in easily, then check the thread area around the adjustment slot.

LarryDFW
Optical Lens Tester

P.S. I have a 9mm die that will rethread the lens assembly. I use it on some longer threaded brass assemblies that I make for some other BR lasers.
You can search for the tap & die link to the supplier on LPF.

Default Re: FS: 405-G-1 Glass Lens Mod-28% Increase vs Aix

pseudolobster, if you have used pliers like you have described, the nut will need to be replaced...

If it was so tight that you had to use pliers, I assure you that the idea Larry has mentioned is not the problem. I have made over 75 of these modifications and there has not been a problem like this. If there is a problem in this area, it is a small 'snag'. (or a 1 out of a hundred fluke) Using pliers is never an option! But I will be double checking for this scenario...

The top of the lens is made for threading on the AixiZ focus ring. It threads into the AixiZ nut either direction. If it was so tight that you had to use pliers, then it must have been cross threaded.

Even if it was a 1 in a hundred fluke, send it back to me so I can re-mount the optic into a new nut.

I have the 9mm die as well, but I would never think of re-using the nut if you have used pliers on it. This idea does not make sense. (nor does using pliers on it for that matter) It needs a new one! Let me take care of it for you...
Jay

P.S. Larry, as an optical lens tester, you really should try to compare the Meredith lenses... I think you will be impressed with how they compare with the other lenses you have tested.

Default Re: FS: 405-G-1 Glass Lens Mod-28% Increase vs Aix

After a long wait, I finally got the lens 8-)

This thing is amazing!!!
My 6x Pocket Mini went from 160mW, to 202mW!!!
That is a 28% increase
If only I had my 6x diode that would do 190mW at that same current...
Imagine the increase

Anyways, the beam is SO MUCH NICER (and thinner) than the stupid AixiZ acrylic beam!
It also focuses better, and upgrades the burning power from WIMPY to INTENSELY VICIOUS!
This lens was worth every penny 8-)

Re: Threading problems

Figured I'd update you guys on the issue I was having with my lens... It seems most of the problem was the threads in the old dilapidated module head I was using. There was a bit of gunk (glue?) in the threads, but after threading it in and out of my old used module for a bit it became loose enough that it threads into a virgin module with no issue.

I've finished a build using the sidebutton host and I'm fully satisfied in every way. Thanks for the offer to replace the lens nut for me, but I'm okay with the threads under the focusing ring being a bit mangled... I was really careful with the pliers and didn't destroy the threads enough that it doesn't still screw on.

Ok...

I heard 'pliers' and figured it was trashed!

Glad it still works for you. If you have second thoughts, send it to me and I will replace the nut at no charge...

Hey Jayrob! You pros have really gotten me excited about this hobby. Unfortunately I spent my wad on flea-bay buying a blu-ray and green dpss before I stumbled onto the LP forum. I'm somewhat happy with those 2 purchases but with acrylic lens and 120mw B-ray and 70mw greenie I feel that I'll soon need some beam viagra. I have a mini-lathe so I'll create a mount for one of those AR lenses that you have. If I'm lucky I might actually have 120mw off of the B-ray. I'll try to post a pic for ID in a couple of days. ;-) *threadjack* I put some tonic water in a glass bottle and the quinine makes a nice white beam.

Default Re: FS: 405-G-1 Glass Lens Mod-28% Increase vs Aix

Got my lenses today, thanks Jay!
The work is very well done, (I am very picky), and as expected, it does make your beam much smaller-diameter, more powerfull, and a bit of "spill" around the half of the "spot", just as Jay described and posted pictures of earlier in this thread.
My meter need to be calibrated up a little, as my readings are always a bit lower than what they should be, and that is confirmed when I have Gooey Gus measure the same lasers. The percentage-increase should still be the essentially same though.

I used my Kryton with a GGW-H20l(6x)-diode driven by a Flex-Drive set to 200mA, here is are my readings:
Aixiz-acrylic 170mW
405-G-1 glass 220mW

An increase of 50mW! And it should extend the life of my diode. Keep in mind, these numbers are relative, they are likely significantly higher, but the percentage should remain constant either way.
In conclusion, I am very happy with this lens, the only down-side seams to be the tiny-pale bit of "debris" around the spot at some distances. I couldn't help but wonder, using a small-aperture in one of Jay's "Groove focus adapter " would probably completely eliminate anything but the dot, and should not reduce your power-reading significantly, probably less than 5mW.
Nice Job Jay
