I guess I would describe them as a 'winged effect'. I think itsbecause the lens is so close to the diode, that these annomalies would normally be clipped by the distance of a greater NA. Ive used two lenses out of the 3 that I have, and both do this.

I havent tested the third yet, im saving it for my next build.

Re: FS: 405-G-1 Glass Lens Mod-28% Increase vs Aix

Glad to see that your making good use of the lenses you got from me WannaBurn... You are living up to your forum name! ;D And I'll bet your blu-ray's WannaBurn everything they touch!

Chuck, just to let you know that your 405-G-1 glass lens mod is shipping today. (Tuesday)

sportcoupe, same goes for yours! (and other item)

...And to add some more information about this modification and the way that it is mounted...

I want to share why I chose the method that I did for mounting the lens.

The lens will fit 'sloppy' in the AixiZ glass nut, unless it is drilled to the precise size needed for the lens. If the lens is just sitting in the retaining ring area, the remaining 'smaller diameter' of the lens nut that the top of the lens will sit against. is not fit properly, and could even chip the glass. *

Not that it will happen, but it could. I am talking from experience. Yes, I chipped a lens trying it this way. This, among other reasons, is why I chose the modification that I came up with.

Even though it requires:

* Enlarging the aperture with one drill size.
* Drilling out the nut to fit the 405-G-1 glass lens sitting on a tiny 'lip'.
* Making a custom spacer to retain the lens. (my custom spacer/retainer sits on the 'rim' of the lens that is made for mounting it)

And... Not only is the barrel of the AixiZ glass lens nut too small in diameter for this mounting method, but the threaded area is too large in diameter for the O.D. of the lens. This is what I mean by fitting 'sloppy'. I guess if it was glued in place, and perfectly aligned, then it would work out. But not a good way to mount the lens. (IMHO)

On the other hand, my method also leaves room for the 'finger grip' focus ring to be installed 'all the way on', and still allow focus! ;)

Hope you like it!
Jay

P.S. Just some information about Meredith... There are two different glass lenses available now. I have tried both of them. I use the best one for red with my Meredith glass fit for AixiZ mod. Their new 405 coated lens is a broad band coating that is decent for both red and blu-ray. But not as good as the 405-G-1 glass lens for blu-ray, and not as good as their original 'optimized for red' lens that I am using for my Meredith/AixiZ mod for red.

at night it starts out with beam stronger than a 150mW green. Amazing.

that is amazing...   I mean my 180mw after acrylic + the 405-G-1 is impressive and burns like crazy, but can't come close to my 150mW green in visual intensity. Maybe you got a really nice diode that's more in the 415nm range...  :-/ Mine is also visible in the night sky but it's a milky-violet (to my eyes) and although the beam is much "thicker" , it's less "luminous" than even my reds. At least to my eyes...  :p

It's like Dave wrote, everyone sees near-UV differently  ;)

He's got to be talking about the visual intensity of the dot, can't be the beam...

nvme, your 405-G-1 glass lens mod is shipping today! (Wednesday) I'll make it to the Post office before they close.

pullbangdead, same goes for yours!

Jay,  You are like the pinnacle of efficiency. Where else can you buy something at 9:00 pm and be told that it will be built and on it's way tomorrow. I'm really surprised that the Chinese have not yet kidnapped you, Dave and Igor and forced you to work in their laser sweatshops for pennies a month!  ;D ;D ;D ;D They would certainly be well served with an LPF lesson on how to engineer and build "hobby style". Everything that I've ever purchased from the three of you has equaled or exceeded the quality levels of all of the major laser companies.  Can't wait to see the extra mW!  Thanks,     Bill

No offense to our Far East friends. (We know that there are no laser sweatshops) ;D

Jay:

God help me.  :-X   I have bought and tried 4 of your 405-G-1 lens on my collection of DIY pointers so far. (just the 650nm and 405nm ones)  Am so satisfied with the results that I am thinking of doing it to all mine. I have 9  :'( :'(                     What will MaMa say?

Can you figure out how to get one into an O-like module?                    I got 7 of those  ;D ;D ;D

EDIT:  won't post my results. It would just be redundant !!

Re: FS: 405-G-1 Glass Lens Mod-28% Increase vs Aix

:thanks: Thanks for posting back John... Glad you like them! :)

I have the same problem! But so far, I am just putting them on my 6X builds and only one PHR build. Of course I will have one on my 8X which I just ordered yesterday.

Although these are totally awesome, I still want to compare Igor's best glass lens that he had found of the 8 or so different ones that he tested.

He told me that even the best ones had some of this 'side splash'. But just exactly how they compare can only be determined by a side by side comparison.

I have messaged and e-mailed him more than once about this, but he has not responded??

x101xtreme, your order is also shipping today, along with the others that I already mentioned! (Thursday)

Finally, although I agree with the statement that the picture is awesome, you will no doubt notice that the light from both the pump diode and the output beam can be seen on other surfaces.  Even in the free air environment, reflection is an issue

Peace,
dave

I just noticed this one.. a bit late I know :-[ In the pic, the reflected green was coming off the face of my camera which is silver. I tried to get the lens close to the path of the beam as my camera doesnt pick up green well. Not saying that no light reflects off the medium, and the IR can be seen doing this. Mind you the pump and the medium are on extreme angles here. I didnt look behind the crystal, but the IR could possibly been reflecting back off part of the brass as well.

I also have noticed before that you will get some back reflection in green, it would seem that not all the green travels forward through the medium and some actually comes back out the rear. I have only seen this on a few crystal sets, but it does happen as well..

But I still say that NO diode can compare to the clean output of dpss. I guess they both have their strong and weak points :) The only thing that I would say is a bad point of DPSS is the lack of ability when using TTL.

I had to quote you in this thread Mike, because that's the kind of excitement that needs to be seen here!

Got your fingers too huh? ;D

Great to sense this kind of enthusiasm from such a seasoned laserist such as yourself! :)

Re: FS: 405-G-1 Glass Lens Mod-28% Increase vs Aix

Ah... you must have taken it apart and seen how perfectly it is fit in the brass nut huh? How perfectly the custom spacer is fit to the outside mounting 'rim' of the glass lens...

Glad you like it! And thanks for posting back! :)
